I still love you Madonna....

11.30.03 (5:16 pm)   [edit]
Once upon a time, before the whole DJ phenomenon took off, record companies used to create "extended dance mixes" of singles that were intended for the dance floor, often remixed by the album's original producer. In Madonna's early years, Jellybean Benitez and Shep Pettibone created some great dance mixes of tunes that didn't lose the great flavor of the original. These have virtually disappeared with the proliferation of DJs and the growth of club culture.

Remixers want to imprint the single with their own signature sound, so you end up with a maxi-single with eight different mixes, yet none carry the flashy pop hooks of the original. The original hook has been so translated, diluted, or buried that the song is virtually unrecognizable.

We are all too familiar with formulaic remixes that typically start out with a repeated 16-beat measure to which elements are added, one at a time, until after about a minute the song reaches a thundering, ear-splitting zenith. Then the often laborious translation of the melody continues for about seven minutes (five if we're lucky, four if we're really lucky), and ends abruptly in an abyss of beats that goes on for another wrist-slitting two minwtes, the perfect amount of time for an inexperienced DJ to mix in the next unintelligible song or for an irresponsible circuit boy to fall out on GHB and ruin the night for everybody.

Really, I am a HUGE fan of dance music. I devour it. I just hate mediocrity, and I long for the times when stepping out onto the dance floor was actually fun.

What inspired this post were abyssmal remixes for Madonna's "Nobody Knows Me." I know she likes to work with new people (blah, blah, blah) but I'd rather have bamboo hammered under my fingernails than listen to these things. Why isn't Mirwais doing some remixes for these songs?

I realize that DJs have certain styles and constraints, and there are a lot out there that I love (and certain McRemixes that I love too). I just hate when a song I love gets remixed so poorly.

EXAMPLES OF GOOD MCREMIXES OVER THE YEARS

"Beautiful Stranger" — Madonna (Victor Calderone Remix)
"One by One" — Cher (Junior Vasquez Remix)
"Body" — Funky Green Dogs (Club 69 Remix)
"No More Drama" — Mary J. Blige (Thunderpuss Remix)

Unfortunately, these McRemixers can also be the worst offenders. When they are lazy, it is bad news for music.

Would you like some fries with that?

P.S. Madonna's new Album entitled Remixed and Revisted was release this week. Did I just show my age by calling it an album?

Lost on Me Abercrombie.....

11.30.03 (5:08 pm)   [edit]
Abercrombie and Fitch's new ad campaign is "the Legend of the Great Moose". What is it about, who cares. I was too bored to read the entire article. Okay, YES, A & F has really hot models and a great eye candy catalog BUT I get so sick of men my age (32) wearing Abercrombie clothes. Clothes that are designed for, marketed to, and purchased by 14-20 year olds. Grow up men! That's why we have J. Crew or the Gap.

The Canadian Psychological Association Monday announced its support for same-sex marriage. The endorsement from the group, which represents 5,300 psychologists and students across Canada, will likely be a key piece of evidence when the Supreme Court of Canada considers a federal bill that would extend gay marriage across the country.

The CPA said that studies show children raised by gay parents are not worse off psychologically or more prone to be gay themselves.

"All children deserve to feel that society accepts and recognizes their families," said Dr. Patrick O'Neill, association president. "Children of same-sex couples are no exception."

Massachusetts Residents Only...darn!

11.30.03 (4:38 pm)   [edit]
(Boston) If you live in New York City or Boise, Idaho don't plan on a spring wedding in Massachusetts. When same-sex marriage becomes legal in Massachusetts next year, it will only be for couples who live in the state.

Under existing state law, nonresidents are barred from getting a marriage license if the union is not legal in the state where the couple live. Massachusetts will be the only state where same-sex marriage is legal.

The law has been on the books for years and was aimed at preventing couples who might be under age in one state running to Massachusetts to tie the knot. It rarely has been invoked because most states have uniform marriage laws.

Man indicted in plot to bomb gay bars
Stephen John Jordi, 35, of Coconut Creek, Florida, has been indicted on charges he plotted to firebomb gay bars, "apostate churches" and abortion clinics. Prosecutors say he was very close to carrying out his plan to bomb buildings across the Eastern United States when he was arrested Nov. 11. The Fort Lauderdale-area resident, a former Army Ranger, was indicted on charges of attempted arson, distribution of information on explosives and possession of an unregistered firearm - a silencer. His brother first brought Jordi to the attention of investigators.

Group seeks more gender-free restrooms at University of Chicago.
Transgender, gay and feminist groups at the University of Chicago are asking officials to consider creating more gender-neutral bathrooms, saying some people aren't comfortable selecting a gender-specific facility. "Persons who are not easily legible as male or female often experience various forms of intimidation in these places. If a woman in a women's-only restroom is assumed to be a man, there may be real threats to her comfort and even safety," warns the Coalition for a Queer Safe Campus. "Students have faced gay-baiting comments in our university's sex-segregated bathrooms."

Malamoutsis had approached Himonetos after recognizing him as former customer at a restaurant where he once worked. Malamoutsis told the men he is now a bartender at the Castle, a gay club. Police say the three ambushed Malamoutsis and his friends after last call.

Little support for same-sex marriage among African Americans!
Every time the Rev. Talbert Swan II hears the fight for gay marriage compared to African Americans' struggle for equality, it "sticks in my craw," he says. He's having a bad week, then. The Massachusetts ruling clearing the way for same-sex marriage cited laws that struck bans on interracial marriage. Numerous editorials picked up on it. In Wednesday's Democratic debate, both black candidates, Carol Moseley Braun and the Rev. Al Sharpton, declared support for gay marriage, and both compared it to past discrimination against African Americans. But a recent national poll indicates little support for same-sex marriage among African Americans. Herald-Tribune

Britain promotes controversial gay cop
No, Brian Paddick isn't controversial because he's gay; he's controversial because he convinced top brass that police time could be better spent than in processing arrests for small amounts of marijuana. He pioneered a policy that allowed people caught with small amounts to be let go with a warning rather than arrested, so that police could attend to other matters. Now Paddick, who was among the leaders of this year's London Pride police contingent, has been appointed as the new Acting Deputy Assistant Commissioner.

Short Takes
In Lexington, Kentucky, an HIV education group says Scott County High School administrators told volunteers to remove queer-specific brochures at a student health fair. Cathy Cox of AIDS Volunteers Inc. said group members were instructed Friday not to display "Young and Gay: Protect Yourself" and "Lesbians and HIV: Are You at Risk?" Principal Doug Southworth also vetoed a postcard featuring a shirtless man posing by a statue of a horse.

Kirstie Alley, unemployed?

Pier 1 is replacing company spokeswoman Kirstie Alley with Queer Eye's Thom. We seriously hope that they don't make him put on a fairy dress like they did to Kirstie, although the hysterical press release from GLAAD would be fun to read.

'Straight Eye for the Queer Guy' coming to Bravo

11.25.03 (2:10 pm)   [edit]
It was bound to happen. On the heels of the success of Bravo's reality makeover smash "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy" comes "Straight Eye for the Queer Guy," a one-shot spinoff that flips the formula, letting five strapping straight men make over a gay guy, reports Variety.

The five connoisseurs on all things straight haven't yet been cast, but possible tutorials include Power Tools 101, NFL basics, decorating your garage, two-minute hair and sports event etiquette.

No word on whether the original Fab 5 - Carson Kressley, Jai Rodriguez, Kyan Douglas, Ted Allen and Thom Filicia - will appear.

No target air date has been set, but a Bravo spokesman said the special will air sometime next year.

Reader Comments:

11.24.03 (7:27 am)   [edit]
I can understand citing the MA SJC decision as an EVENT this past week, but to
mention Michael Jackson... suspected of pedophilia... in connection with a Gay
Newsletter update panders right to the homophobe expectations and prejudices
that all gays are after their children.

Jackson may be harmless or incredible twisted, but he is surely not someone
who's criminal prosecution warrants coverage here.

Look at the Boston papers in the wake of the court decision... wall to wall
coverage about a gay priest willing his mansion to a "lover" who is held for
the murder of a 19 year old... a Health Dept. piece that would normally not
make the papers appears on page two blaring that syphillis infections are UP
for gay men.

There will be plenty of extremely hostile coverage given to anything that can
cultivate a backlash against the legitimate court decision. Let's not be part
of that by even mentioning someone like Jackson whose judgment, if not his
behavior, is extremely disturbing.

[b]GayNewEngland.net Response: [/b] We apologize. May have been in bad taste. Thanks so much for your feedback and for being a GNE reader.

Ty Pennington

11.24.03 (7:25 am)   [edit]
Correction: Ty is not gay, sad to say. Here is what Ty has to say: And unfortunately, when it comes to the bedroom, this handyman is as straight as a two by four.
“I am 100 percent hetero, and I do apologize. I wish I could break on through to the other side, but maybe … maybe I just haven’t met the right guy,” he jokes.
But Pennington says he’s learned invaluable lessons for various gays and lesbians in the design biz. During high school, he discovered the ins and outs of latex and satin finishes with a predominately lesbian crew called Paint Hers. And on Monday, Pennington is making a visit to Dallas for a book-signing event at JR.’s.
“Dude, I am big with the gay-club scene,” he laughs. “You don’t get any better parties except at the gay club, so that’s where I’m throwing my book party.”

We still love ya Ty, and you are sexy man!

Somerville: Gay marrige no big whoop

11.21.03 (6:37 am)   [edit]
They're just waiting for the opportunity to marry up some queer couples in Somerville, Massachusetts. While the ruling is being debated across the nation, in Somerville, it is either being quietly accepted, or openly celebrated. The Rev. Marlayna Schmidt at the First Congregational Church is "ecstatic" with the court's decision. Carl Sciortino, co-chairman of OutSomerville, a coalition serving the queer community in the area, says members are thrilled. And the Rev. Ralph M. Hergert of the Grace Baptist Church says the ruling is a good thing for Christians who are gay and believe their union to be blessed by God and want it to be blessed in church.

Good Morning GNE readers. I just wanted to let you know about a great Movie review source for those who have asked about movies reviews. We will be adding a link from the site soon but wanted to give you a heads up. Click the following: http://www.hereboston.com/ind...

This is a friend of mine's site/club/news source called HereBoston and it is fabulous. He has a large staff of film and arts critics and you should check it out.

Also, don't forget that on Bravo tonight is the season premier for Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.

That's all we have for today!

Gay Themed Films

11.16.03 (3:10 pm)   [edit]
We live in a town that has one video or dvd rental choice and it's Lackluster, I mean Blockbuster. Have you ever tried to rent a GLBT themed movie at a Blockbuster? Well, good luck finding more than three whole titles.

Our Western Massachusetts correspondent Philip Zaia and my co-worker Laura have been raving about Netflix for ever. I was reluctant to rent DVD's through the mail and just had trouble grasping the concept. (I know, I am old school.)

What Netflix is is a warehouse of thousands of DVD titles. You get 3 movies at a time shipped via US mail (you get them in one day from ordering, or at least we do.) You can return them in a postage paid envelope, one at a time or all at once. Your choice. You get to watch as many movies as you wish in a month for 21 bucks. Pretty cool. What I like about it is its extensive GLBT selection. In the past month we have seen some awesome (and some strange) Gay themed films including:

Red Dirt, The Last Year, Boys Shorts (stories), From the Edge of the City, If these Walls Could Talk 2, Beautiful Thing, L.I.E, and Johns among others.

Pretty fun, check it out if you are in a town similar to ours!

Peace and happy Sunday!

Well the weekend is coming...thank goodness! So Rosie didn't have to pay 100 million, I am glad. Although she has been coming across kinda nasty in the media, how soon people forget all the good she has done and continues to do.

Thanks to the people of Manchester, Connecticut who have donated a gigantic spruce to New York City for the Rockefeller Plaza. As beautiful as it is to see the tree each year in NYC, I still think it is sad that after 50 years the tree gets uprooted and dragged off. Maybe the 30 days of joy viewing it are worth it...maybe not.

Although I am getting tired of reality tv, I still catch myself watching Joe Millionaire to look at David Smith's hot bod. Who can blame me, wow!

Madonna will be on TRL today on MTV for those fotunate enough to not be at work.

Until Later....

Boy Meets Boy--

11.11.03 (3:59 pm)   [edit]
Remember Wes from Boy Meets Boy. Ever wonder what he's up to? From his own Blog (link below) he says:

Tuesday, November 11, 2003

Haha...and thus it begin! What I love most about reality TV is that the media loves to build it up to perfection and then tear it right back down again. ;)

Here we go! Weeeeee!

"Boys Meets Boy is old news, but I gotz to go there. No one wants to talk about what happened in the final episode. America witnessed two supreme bottom beings pretending to be the perfect match. How is that winning?"

Whether in the house or out-on-the-town, each contestant will be individually assessed in such areas as imagination, initiative, experimentation and enthusiasm by a panel of judges, all well-respected figures in the areas of film, television, music, glamour photography and adult entertainment.

Yes, the show features "real people having real sex."

Daily Question

11.07.03 (10:43 am)   [edit]
When gay couple Reichen and Chip won television's The Amazing Race, they became heroes of the gay community. Mainly because CBS boldly labeled them on the show as "married." Since the show ended, Reichen and Chip have officially divorced. So now everyone's wondering why did Reichen and Chip break up?

A. Their 15-minutes of fame was so intense that their relationship couldn't handle the pressure.

B. Reichen cheated on Chip with another Amazing Race contestant, Chuck the virgin (who's clearly a closet-case).

C. Now that they've won a million dollars, Reichen can finally get that sex change operation he's always wanted. Chip only dates men.

D. It's all part of a ruse. They're really Christian fundamentalists trying to prove that gay marriage doesn't work.

E. Reichen realized he's way hotter than Chip and moved on.
