The Atlantic House, also known as the A-House, is Provincetown's most popular and only year-round dance club. This complex consists of the Little Bar (cruise bar with juke box) - The Macho Bar (Provincetown's original leather and Levi bar) & the Big Room (Provincetown's #1 Dance Club!)

Resident D.J. and Billboard Magazine reporter David LaSalle embarks on his 22nd season as Provincetown's longest running D.J. playing the most current music and progressive tracks in town.

The A-House's infamous Friday night parties continue with a different theme offered each week with a cash prize awarded for the best costume or presentation. The A-House is also the only bar that is consistantly busy 7 nights a week unlike other establishments that offer 1 or 2 special nights. The bar of choice for most locals and visitors alike, the A-House also lays claim to being one of the oldest historical buildings in town (built in 1798) and possibly one of the first discos in the country.

No attitude or pretense here. A bar where everyone is welcome, gay, lesbian, straight, CD, whatever. Stop by and enjoy the experience!

A Personal Question?

Okay, I usually don't post items that are personal in nature as I try to keep this forum to all things GLBT in New England, but.....

I love this chair below, but my partner isn't too fond of it. My thoughts are for the price (dirt cheap), we can't go wrong. What do you think? BTW, if you click on it you get full description. Help me out fabulous people!

Recent News Tid Bits!

01.29.04 (3:46 am)   [edit]
Atkins-- If you've recently read or heard media coverage that the Atkins diet has changed its stand on the consumption of fat, take note: Today the company stated on its Web site that the information is not true, calling the reports inappropriate and wrong.

The recent reports claim that Atkins is changing its position on the consumption of saturated fat.

But it turns out the reports are false and the plan has not been modified. Atkins dieters should continue to follow the diet just as it is written in Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution.

A news update at Atkins.com confirms that the tenets behind the Atkins plan -- officially referred to as the ANA or the Atkins Nutritional Approach -- have not changed ... neither recently nor in 30-plus years the book has been on the market.

(The principles behind the plan are to control your intake of carbs, particularly by avoiding refined sugars; and to eat a healthy balance of fat, including a variety of protein sources, such as beef, chicken or tofu.)

Kerry- As he did in Iowa, Massachusetts Senator John Kerry walked away from New Hampshire the victor last night. Does that mean we can just fast forward to the general election? Not so fast. I remember another New England senator named Paul Tsongas who edged out newcomer Bill Clinton in 1992. If you ask this political observer, this isn't over.

Jai Rodriguez is recording his debut album
Jai Rodriguez, the culture maven of Bravo/NBC hit reality series "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," is in the studio recording his debut album. If initial tracks are any indication, the full-length will encompass dance ("Love Is Good"), R&B ("Back to L.A.") and pop ("Shining Star"). And don't fret, Rodriguez can sing. Prior to "Queer Eye," he spent time on and off Broadway performing in "Rent" and "Zanna, Don't!" respectively. Last March, Arrive at Eleven Productions issued "Love Is Good." The track became something of a favorite in New York, prompting Rodriguez to perform at The Roxy. Then came "Queer Eye." Rodriguez says he wants the album to be complete by June. Until then, he'll continue recording, taping episodes of "Queer Eye" and shopping for a label deal.

Entertainment industry waking up to demand for gay programming
From Hollywood to Madison Avenue, the entertainment industry is beginning to discover the influence that gay consumers have in the success of general entertainment products and that there is pent-up demand for gay programming. According to @PLAN, 46.9 percent of gay people online watch premium cable, compared to 36.2 percent of the general online population. Major networks seem to be pushing out gay programming as fast as they can, ranging from "The L Word" or "Queer as Folk" on Showtime to a couple of new reality series on Bravo and NBC. Even satellite TV is going gay. Earlier this month DirecTV announced the upcoming launch of Here!, the first pay-per-view gay movie network.

Britney Gives Madonna French Career Award

01.26.04 (2:20 am)   [edit]
Sun Jan 25,11:57 AM ET

CANNES, France - Madonna (news - web sites) made a brief appearance at a French music awards show this weekend, accepting a career award from Britney Spears (news) and thanking France's fans for two decades of support.

Madonna, wearing a demure green polka-dot dress, didn't perform at NRJ radio station's awards ceremony Saturday, but she still got a standing ovation. The pop divas didn't exchange kisses, unlike at the MTV Video Music Awards in August — which prompted inevitable cracks from French presenters later in the show.

Did Bush Make Pass At Canadian Male Political Aide?
Posted: January 25, 2004 5:01 p.m. ET

(Ottawa) Details are emerging about a strange meeting involving US President George W. Bush and a senior aide to Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin.

It allegedly occurred following a breakfast between Bush and Martin at the recent summit in Monterrey, Mexico,. As the two leaders discussed issues dividing the countries; the war in Iraq, trade, and mad cow disease; Martin called in Scott Reid, his senior strategist.

It was Reid's job to brief Martin prior to a press conference Martin and Bush were about to give. As the Prime Minister spoke with his aide, Bush wandered over to introduce himself.

"Well, what do you do for this guy?" the President asked as he pointed to the Prime Minister.

"Well, you know, sir, I can't really say," Reid said. "It's not that I don't want to. It's just that, you know, I don't really know from day to day."

Reid is known as a "fixer" handing a number of sensitive issues in the Prime Minister's Office.

The President chuckled. "Well, you got a pretty face," he told the surprised Reid.

And, the president wasn't done. "You got a pretty face," he said again. "You're a good-looking guy. Better looking than my Scott anyway."

The other Scott is Scott McClellan, Bush's press secretary.

The Canadian Scott is 35 and ruggedly handsome. The American version is balding and chubby.

"I didn't know what to say," Reid later told reporters.

"When a Texas Republican says you've got a pretty face, then I guess there is just no way around it."

Another Canadian in the room suggested that if Reid had been a woman Bush might have found himself in a sex discrimination suit and the subject of a Congressional inquiry.

In other news...

(Washington, D.C.) If an election were held today John Kerry would likely defeat President Bush a new poll shows. It is the first time that a poll has indicated any of the Democratic candidates could beat the GOP incumbent in 2004.

The Newsweek Poll was taken just after Bush's State of the Union Address last week, and following Kerry's win in the Iowa Caucuses.

The survey found that among Democrats and independents, 52 percent of voters don't want to see Bush re-elected, while only 44% do. But, it also found that 78% believe Bush will be back in the White House for a second term.
The poll discovered that a race between Gen Wesley Clark and Bush would be a close, with Bush at 48 percent and Clark at 47 percent. Bush would have an edge over Edwards (49% to 46%). Yet, with a plus or minus margin of error, these match-ups result in a statistical dead heat. And the President would beat Dean (50% to 45%) and Sen. Joe Lieberman (49% to 45%).

Separate polls also show Kerry leading going into Tuesday's New Hampshire primary.

Sen. Kerry was grilled Sunday about his position on same-sex unions on Fox television.

Anchor Chris Wallace pressed the Massachusetts Democrat for voting against the federal Defense of Marriage Act.

"I don't support marriage among gays. I've said that many times," Kerry said. "But I also don't support the United States Senate being used for gay bashing, for, sort of, discriminatory efforts to try to drive wedges between the American people."

Wallace pointed out that a large number of Democrats in the Senate disagreed with his decision not to support the bill and that President Bill Clinton signed it.

"Because it's an issue that scares people," Kerry countered. "I said that I do not support marriage, but I don't support the Senate being used to drive wedge issues.

"There was no issue when we voted on that. That was politics. And I think it was the politics of discrimination. And that's what I said on the floor. Go read what I said."

Kerry then repeated that he does not support gay marriage. "But I also support equal protection under the law. I support not having a president who wants to drive wedges between people and try to divide Americans ... I'm telling you that while I don't support marriage among, you know, for gays, I do support rights. I support equality. I support equal protection under the law."

Clerk charged with grabbing student's $20,000 lottery ticket

01.24.04 (9:49 am)   [edit]
Saturday January 24, 2004

WESTBORO, Mass. (AP) A convenience store clerk has been charged with larceny for allegedly snatching a winning $20,000 lottery ticket from a customer's hand and giving her only $100.

Antoine Y. Reiche, 34, of Westboro, was arrested Thursday night and was scheduled to be arraigned Friday in Westboro District Court on a charge of larceny over $250. The arraignment was changed to Monday after the clerk claimed not to understand English.

Also on Friday, the Massachusetts State Lottery Commission suspended the Quik Mart's lottery sales license over the flap, the MetroWest Daily News reported.

Erika Schmitt, 18, alleged that she went to the store and bought a $2 Lucky Star ticket Monday night. When the University of Massachusetts freshman scratched it in the store, she uncovered 10 stars, which merits the game's $20,000 grand prize.

But when she told the clerk, who she knew as ``Tony'' from previous visits to the store, he allegedly grabbed the ticket and told her the ticket showed only six stars, which had a $100 prize. He then refused to show her the ticket when she demanded to see it.

``He wouldn't give the ticket back,'' said Virginia Orlando, Schmitt's friend who was with her that night. ``He said, 'Get out, get out. Go spend your money.'''

Schmitt bought a second ticket to verify the game rules, and then went to police. An officer escorted her back to the store and confronted Reiche, who said he verified the winning ticket, paid Schmitt her winnings and threw the ticket away. The winning 10-star ticket has not been located.

The Lottery Commission confirmed that the book of tickets from which Schmitt purchased her ticket had one $20,000 winning ticket. The ticket has not been cashed.

When Reiche appeared in Westboro District Court Friday, he claimed through his lawyer, Ann Johnston, that he needed a translator. She asked that the arraignment hearing be moved to Monday.

Lottery Commission spokeswoman Amy Morris said the allegations are under investigation.

CBS & Bush!

01.23.04 (10:05 am)   [edit]
During this year's Super Bowl, you'll see ads sponsored by beer companies, tobacco companies, and the Bush White House. But you won't see the winning ad in MoveOn.org Voter Fund's Bush in 30 Seconds ad contest. CBS refuses to air it.

Meanwhile, the White House and Congressional Republicans are on the verge of signing into law a deal which Senator John McCain (R-AZ) says is custom-tailored for CBS and Fox, allowing the two networks to grow much bigger. CBS lobbied hard for this rule change; MoveOn.org members across the country lobbied against it; and now the MoveOn.org ad has been rejected while the White House ad will be played. It looks an awful lot like CBS is playing politics with the right to free speech.

Of course, this is bigger than just the MoveOn.org Voter Fund. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) submitted an ad that was also rejected. We need to let CBS know that this practice of arbitrarily turning down ads that may be "controversial" - especially if they're controversial simply because they take on the President - just isn't right.

To watch the ad that CBS won't air and sign the petition to CBS to run these ads, go to:

Log Cabin dumps Bush over State of the Union
The Log Cabin Republicans group has said it can no longer support the president because of his State of the Union speech, which lumped gay marriage in the same threat-to-America category as terrorism and Iraqi "thugs." "We will not stand with anyone who is willing to write discrimination into the Constitution," said Log Cabin's Patrick Guerriero. Meanwhile, Charles Francis, chairman of another gay group, the Republican Unity Coalition, stuck by the White House, arguing that Bush had not yet explicitly called for an amendment to the Constitution barring recognition of gay marriage, though he added, "He has come about as close as he can get." Utah anti-gay marriage bill stalls
A bill reaffirming Utah's ban on same-sex marriages is being revamped after legal experts said it needs more "artful crafting" to pass constitutional review. Its biggest flaw: It would bar same-sex couples who marry or enter into civil unions elsewhere from going to court to resolve questions on matters ranging from child custody to inheritance rights and insurance benefits. That provision in SB24 violates both open-court and equal-protection clauses in the Utah Constitution, said Michael D. Zimmerman, former chief justice of the Utah Supreme Court. In an unlikely consensus, the ACLU of Utah and two Brigham Young University law professors also cited constitutional shortcomings in the bill.

Court rules entrapment in 'party' bust

01.22.04 (10:18 am)   [edit]
1/22/2004

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Even police detectives have to be careful what they ask for -- and how they look when they're asking for it.

An appeals court says a gay man was a victim of entrapment because didn't know an undercover detective was looking for drugs when the officer asked him if he wanted to "party."

Julio Blanco, 37, who described himself as a lonely gay man, said that he understood "party" to mean having a good time or being sexually involved.

The Fourth District Court of Appeal on Wednesday upheld Broward Circuit Judge Susan Lebow's decision that Blanco thought the officer might have been looking for a sexual relationship.

According to court records, Fort Lauderdale police Detective Mike Nahum, working with a Drug Enforcement Administration team, followed up with several requests for cocaine.

Blanco refused three times and even tried to leave, but was ultimately convinced to stay. Eventually he went to the restroom and bought some methamphetamine for the officer.

"The whole situation seemed very clear to me," Lebow said during a 2002 hearing. "I mean, the detective walked in dressed in a T-shirt and jeans, and for the record he was a very attractive man and ..."

The defense attorney interrupted and asked the judge to make an official finding that Nahum was attractive, which she did.

"For the record, I would submit he was about 6 feet, 2 inches. He was in good shape, you know, a fit individual, young detective, looked to be maybe 30," Blanco's attorney, Kevin J. Kulik, said.

Nahum testified that he had done nothing to make himself appear attractive to Blanco and said he understood "party" to mean drugs.

The appeals court agreed that Blanco had been entrapped by "non-verbal communication" used by the undercover officer.

Dennis Miller's version of the right wing.

01.21.04 (5:31 am)   [edit]
Dennis Miller, whose new CNBC show "Dennis Miller" will co-star a chimpanzee, talks about his brand of conservatism: "There are certain things I'm liberal on, certain things I'm conservative on. For example, if two gay guys want to get married, I couldn't care less. If some psycho from another country wants to blow up their wedding, I expect my government to kill him pre-emptively. I guess that makes me a right-wing fanatic."

Bush attacks gay marriage
In his State of the Union address, President Bush described the threats to the United States: terrorists, "thugs" in Iraq and "activist judges" who have been "redefining marriage" by striking down laws against gay marriage. Declaring that "the people's voice must be heard," he hinted at support behind a proposed constitutional amendment to outlaw same-sex marriages. "If judges insist on forcing their arbitrary will upon the people, the only alternative left to the people would be the constitutional process. Our nation must defend the sanctity of marriage," Bush said.

Terrific Tuesday in New England...

=http://www.gaynewengland.net target=_blank [image]gaynewengland_1365 993119.jpg[/image]

Okay, so it is 6:52 a.m. and I am trying to start this day off on an optimistic note. Back to work (argh, real job) is always fun the day after a holiday. 128 (aka 95, aka Route 1) is a traffic nightmare at the start of a work week.

I have a lot of little tid bits to cover so here it goes:

It is so friggin cold out that I ask myself the same question I ask every winter in New England..."Why do I live here?" I can think of a hundred reasons why but brrrr, this cold sucks!

It appears that there are NO gay Patriots fans. We did not have a single Patriots comment in the past few days to either the photos on the main site or the posting in the blog. Yeah, Yeah we get it....stick to gay themed shit. We know! We just love football for some kockamaney reason and thoughts you guys/gals might too! Guess not...

John Kerry #1 in Iowa caucus. Normally I would say GAG as I am not a huge fan of Kerry. (Comeback Kerry, corny!!!) I simply don't find him likeable and I am a firm believer that a President needs to be liked to get things done. HOWEVER, the more Dr. Dean opens his mouth the more I shreak in horror. The only candidate the I feel holds his calm (although no chance in hell or getting elected) is Wesley Clark. Bush??? We don't use offensive words on this site!

President Bush will take the drive up Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol tonight to deliver the State of the Union address, telling Americans he considers marriage to be the union of a man and a woman.

Some recent Boston Club News: Machine is now under a new promoter and I am pleased. Do you all remember our not so favorable review when we went in the autumn of 2003....It is a great space so best of luck to the new promoter. I feel it will be a success!

From our Friends at HereBoston (link on left) it is rumoured that Vapor has been sold and will be renovated to once again be Chaps (the former name). I remember Chaps in the old days on Huntington Avenue. Great tea dances on Sundays, Disco on Tuesdays, and Lolly kicking up a fabulous cocktail. It was the day when people had a few Rolling Rock's and had fun without drugs. Imagine that! :!:

American Idol is back and Simon is as bitchy as ever, but rightfully so. I have never seen such talent vacant individuals in my life. I use to believe the children were the future.... And Ryan Seacrest is like a pocket sized dude. What a tinly lil' guy. He is cute but EAT SOMETHING already!

Martin Luther King, Jr. -- Thoughts

01.19.04 (7:08 am)   [edit]
Many think of this "holiday" as an African-American day of remembrance, but truly this is a day of remembrance for all who believe in civil rights and equality. Dr. King was an extremely brave man with strong convictions who shaped history almost single-handedly. When I think of Dr. King, I am grateful as his steps towards equality for black Americans also opened the doors towards the GLBT community's (and many others!) fight for equality then and now, some 30 plus years later.

We may not have a single one person leading our fight, but we have each other. United we stand, divided we fall.

Today In Gay History

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere"

01.18.04 (5:24 pm)   [edit]
On the eve of the nation's celebration of the accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., many people are arguing over the breadth of his message, whether King's struggle for civil rights for African Americans equates to a struggle for the rights of all people, including the GLBT community. Within and without the African American population, people disagree on differences and similarities between the current gay and lesbian movement and the model of King's civil rights movement. In both cases, the courts ruled for more rights when the public polled strongly against it. Both King's wife, Coretta Skott King, and Martin Luther King III, argue that any inequality is a threat to all of us.

What's wrong, Britney?

01.18.04 (7:39 am)   [edit]
Is Britney Spears lovesick?
Two weeks after the pop tart married and then dumped a hometown honey in Las Vegas, photos have emerged of her leaving a hospital.

The pictures surfaced in Britain's News of the World, which spotted Spears at the Centinela Hospital Medical Center in Los Angeles on Thursday.

The newspaper says Spears arrived for a 9 a.m. appointment with her mother, Lynne, who was described as "grim-faced." The two left an hour later.

The visit apparently didn't cure what ailed her, because Spears was back to the doctor the next morning, this time at the Parkside Medical Center in Santa Monica.

A source at the medical-office complex told the paper that Spears looked "very downcast and subdued" and was the talk of the building.

A spokeswoman for Spears could not be reached for comment on the report last night.

The 22-year-old singer has been keeping a low profile since the uproar over her 55-hour marriage to childhood pal Jason Alexander.

The two tied the knot at the Little White Chapel in Vegas on Jan. 3 but had the union annulled two days later.

In a phone call to MTV's "Total Request Live" last week - to promote her new single "Toxic" - Spears said she was swept away by Sin City's allure.

Should Google allow ads for illegitimate pharmacies? State your opinion!

I asked the Drug Enforcement Agency for their position on Google allowing advertising for illegitimate online pharmacies. Ed Childress, a Special Agent with the DEA said, "the DEA doesn't regulate the internet. However, we're very concerned."

Carmen Catizone, executive director of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy said, "It's concerning to us that those ads are still appearing. That legitimzes those practices and confuses consumers. If those ads are still on their site we've got some discussions."

Conservative Group Admits Twisting Gay Marriage Poll

(Boston, Massachusetts) The leader of a conservative group fighting same-sex marriage in Massachusetts Friday admitted misrepresenting the findings of a statewide poll to support his cause.

At a protest Wednesday at the legislature (story) Ron Crews of the Massachusetts Family Institute cited a Zogby poll that indicated 69 percent of respondents wanted a chance to vote on amending the state constitution to ban gay marriage.

What do Britney's antics say about heterosexuals and marriage?

Columnist Kim Ode wonders what the funny, funny joke is that went too far, leading singer Britney Spears to wed a childhood friend (who apparently isn't laughing), then file for a fast annulment. "Imagine for a moment that it wasn't Spears and a childhood friend who married and cried 'Kidding!' in less time than some cold medicines last. Imagine that it was Elton John and Carson Kressley," Ode writes. "... Spears' fly-by-night Vegas vows with a childhood friend resound like a vaudeville rimshot to the solemn drumbeat of those who say that same-sex unions threaten traditional marriage."

GayNewEngland.net Response: Imagine...we (GLBT) threaten the sanctity of marriage? Let me also remind you:

Married a Millionaire TV Show, The Bachelor shows, and 95% of celebrity couples. Yeah, I think Str8 people make a mockery of marriage. Something we are fighting so damn hard to get!!

In other anti-gay marriage news.....

Conservatives' anti-marriage poll backfires
An Internet poll conducted by the anti-gay American Family Association showed by yesterday that more than two-thirds of respondents favor legalizing gay marriage or civil unions. With more than 700,000 votes cast, "America's Poll on Homosexual Marriage" showed 59.55 percent of respondents voting in favor of legalization of gay marriage, with 32.51 percent opposing it. And 7.94 percent voted to favor civil unions with the full benefits of marriage. The survey includes a statement that reads: "Results of this poll will be presented to Congress." "It will be curious to see if they have the guts to report to Congress what their own poll has shown," says gay activist Evan Wolfson of Freedom to Marry.

Some pro-gay marriage news......

Vermont examines its experience of civil unions
The world has not come to an end in Vermont, as some feared when civil unions were approved in the state. Same-sex couples have not relocated to make the state the gayest in the nation. In fact, the annual number of civil unions has dropped steadily after the first year. Vermont also provides a glimpse of how society reacts to gay marriage. "There has been a transformation as the people who were fearful of civil unions came to appreciate the people who were getting them," says Bill Lippert, a gay member of the state Legislature who chairs a committee reviewing the effect of the civil-union law.

I may be a democrat, but I always did like Weld!

Former Gov. & Attorneys General Urge Mass To Enact Gay Marriage

(Boston, Massachusetts) Former Massachusetts Gov. William F. Weld and two former attorneys general Monday told the Legislature to stop trying to skirt the issue of same-sex marriage and obey the ruling of the state's highest court.

Fred Phelps- IGNORANT ASSHOLE!!!

01.06.04 (6:55 am)   [edit]
(Topeka, Kansas) Rebuffed in his bid to build monuments denouncing homosexuality, anti-gay preacher Fred Phelps is setting his sights a bit lower.

Phelps has sent the Topeka Parks and Recreation department a $250 check to have a memorial message placed on a bench in Gage Park.

Memorial plaques on park benches and picnic tables generally are a token of expression of love for family and friends who have died. But, Phelps want his brass plaque to say "Matt Shepard in Hell. He Defied God's Law."

"That's a memorial and it is most appropriate," Phelps told the Topeka Capital-Journal. "It's a message, of course, we have borne all over the United States for almost 13 years now."

Parks and Recreation director Rogers Brazier that he will return the check and not allow the memorial park bench unless the city attorney's office told him and the department that they "absolutely have to."

GayNewEngland.net Response: Fred Phelp's and his ignorance are not worthy of a response!

Well..back to work and in full swing. January to me is all about getting things done (accomplished!). Now, those of you that read GNE on a regular basis have probably been expecting me to rant on topics that have been in the news lately, but...alas..I bite my tongue. I will NOT talk about the following:

1. Britney Spears got married. (Pic of now x-husband below. Can we say DELICIOUS!)
2. The T went up to $1.25 in Boston.
3. I won't say it's about time Liquor Stores are open on Sunday in Massachusetts.
4. I won't say how delicious Tom Brady is.
5. And I won't say that Boston drivers suck!

But you can............ :P

P.S. And I won't say how silly I think Lord of the Rings is, either!

Goose Bumps!

01.03.04 (4:48 pm)   [edit]
The ONE thing that keeps me working on this site everyday is the sense of community that I get to witness on a regular basis. Today, a good friend Tim Nasson of HEREBOSTON.com said something so very kind on his site. Personally I am humbled, as Tim and his team put out a TOP NOTCH quality GLBT web site. A site that I visit everyday, excited to read what is new and exciting!

Tim wrote: "...Happy 2004!
Tim --PS A final thanks needs to be given to Dave Goulart, publisher of GayNewengland.net Dave has done an amazing job with his site, (a great resource for anyone who needs info on anything gay in New England), yet has also, without fail, gone out of his way every week to help promote our site. For that, Dave, we thank you!"

Thanks Tim! Thank you so very much!

GNE readers, please check out Tim's Year in Review and his fabulous site HereBoston.

Also, HereBoston is a Tuesday Night of gay fun in Boston's own Backbay. Please check site for details. My partner and I have been and it was a room filled of upbeat, well dressed, respectable gay boys. Worth the night out, for sure!

File this one under, IMPRESSED with CANADA!

01.03.04 (5:50 am)   [edit]
(Edmonton, Alberta) Edmonton police are taking to heart the old adage "to know what it's like to be me walk a mile in my shoes". In a step believed to be the first of its kind anywhere in the world new police recruits are now required to spend a day in a non-gay area "pretending to be gay".

Last week the first "exercise" was held for two new cops. The officers, wearing civvies walked hand in hand down a typical commercial street.

"I'm trying to get them to understand what it's like to be in that kind of a situation in this city," says Const. Steve Camp, who came up with the idea.

Camp is one of two officers who run the city police hate-and-bias crimes initiative.

GayNewEngland.net Response: Do you think we can make a New England town the first in the states to adopt such a policy?

Ab Fab is Back! Okay, so I am so EXCITED!

01.02.04 (11:25 am)   [edit]
In Absolutely Fabulous: Series 5, Edina and Patsy surround themselves with a constellation of stars, including Kristin Scott Thomas (The English Patient, Gosford Park), former Spice Girl Emma Bunton, Hollywood star Minnie Driver (Good Will Hunting, Gross Pointe Blank), fashionista Jean-Paul Gaultier, and the one-and-only Elton John!
High on the agenda are book clubs with London's top glitterati, weekends in the country a la Madonna and Guy, and intimate gatherings with Elton on the piano. But when Saffy returns from a few months as an aid worker, Edina's heady world is turned upside down by her startling news. Babies and Bollinger don't mix, after all...or do they?

Surgery alters tattoo to read, I love men

01.02.04 (9:32 am)   [edit]
This one smells of urban legend, but we like it anyway: A straight man went into surgery in Britain with the words "I love women" tattooed on his leg, but when he came out it read, "I love men." Oops. The unnamed man was in hospital for a heart-by-pass operation but they needed a vein from his leg to complete the procedure. The British Medical Journal later printed a picture of the tattoo, warning doctors to be careful when sewing up tattooed skin. The man ... says he no longer wears shorts in public.

Stories you may have missed in 2003

01.02.04 (3:26 am)   [edit]
In a long roundup of the sports foibles of 2003, Patrick Hruby points out a couple you might be interested in. First, for some reason, Italian soccer fans held up banners at a game suggesting Michael Jackson had had a sex change. Jackson demanded a formal apology from the team Lazio, whose fans they were. Then basketball legend Michael Jordan reportedly made teammate Kwame Brown cry when he called him a "flaming f----t." Nice work. Washington Times

"To me, it's not a homosexual relationship," quoth actor Sean Astin, referring to fan debates over whether Sam and Frodo are gay in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Could have fooled us. relish

President Bush ran into a woman at his Yale class reunion who said, "You might remember me as Peter when we left Yale." Peter has undergone a few changes since. The president's response, according to an account by San Francisco Chronicle columnist Leah Garchik: "Now you've come back as yourself." Score one for George! Sunspot.net

Finally, the Texas Triangle comes up with a don't-miss roundup of crazy GLBT news, including the woman who sued because her dog needed counseling after she and her ex- had a fist fight, and various stories of gay and lesbian animals from around the globe. Texas Triangle

Paul, Real World blur boy, comes out

01.01.04 (8:33 am)   [edit]
MTV's "Real World New Orleans," which aired in 2000, featured darling Danny, whose new love, Paul, was in the military. Because being recognized could lead to Paul being removed from military service - or worse - his identity was masked by an oval blur for the five months of the series. The couple is still together, although media exposure for Danny finally pushed Paul to leave the military. All this week, MTV News is airing an interview - "Out in the Real World" - with the two that explores their lives and the impact of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" on gay servicemembers. The MTV website has some background on the guys, as well as a photo of the mysterious Paul. Cute, but he's even better looking on the broadcast. MTV

Happy 2004!

01.01.04 (8:14 am)   [edit]
:D

I hope everyone had a safe and happy New Year's Eve!! My partner and I fell asleep at about 9 pm (I know we are so lame) after finishing off a fabulous bottle of chocolate covered champagne that my mother-in-law gave us. It was yummy! (Thanks Mom..she reads the site too!)

We were up bright and early as Marc's dad (dad-in-law) is here helping us finish the renovations on our condo.

We are Hull (Nantasket Beach) bound in the Spring as soon as we find a place. Do any of our readers live in Hull??? And if so, your thoughts? We look forward to being in a beach community. We are currently in Mansfield, Massachusetts so as you can imagine....we can't wait to move!

We wish you health, success, and good fortune in 2004 and hope you continue to visit the site!
