[b]Hey Crackhead [/b]--------------------- ------------------------- -------------------
Yes, you. You sick fucker. On Wednesday morning I emerged from my girlfriend's building by U.N. Plaza to find that you had sawed the tops off both the sparkplugs on my motorcycle. At the time, I had no idea why anyone would do that. Other than the sparkplugs, the bike was untouched. Some kind of bizarre vandalism? A fraternity prank gone awry? I had no idea. All I knew is that I looked like a huge douchebag riding the Muni to work in a padded motorcycle jacket and helmet.

Because the bike was immobilized I got a $35 street sweeping ticket that night. Thursday I had it towed to the shop ($45) where they replaced the sparkplugs and the boots ($50 including labor). They explained to me that "people" - I use the term loosely here - like you break off the tops of spark plugs and use the porcelain tubes to smoke crack. As an engineer and former MacGyver fan, in a way I think this is kind of cool. But then I remember that I just paid $100 for YOUR crackpipes, and I get angry again.

Crackhead, it was really good to have my bike back though. I rode home from the shop with a couple of spare sparkplugs and a smile on my face. I figured the next time I parked at my girlfriend's place overnight I would have to buy some crackpipes and tape them to my bike as a peace offering. Overall, I wasn't that upset. Despite having to ride the bus for three days and dropping a hundred bones at the shop, I had gained some fascinating knowledge, a new set of sparkplugs, and a pretty funny anecdote about how fucked up you are, and how our paths once crossed briefly in the night.

But you couldn't just let sleeping dogs lie, could you Crackhead. You couldn't just stay in on Friday, watch Letterman through the window of a home electronics store and then call it a night. You couldn't rest on your laurels. Two porcelain sparkplug crackpipes just wasn't enough for you, was it Crackhead? You just had to come back for more.

This morning, a scant fifteen hours after I rode it out of the shop, I found my motorcycle violated once again. This time you only took the right one - maybe you were having an off night. At least this time I had a spare sparkplug and the tools to fix it - or so I thought - having ordered a 73-piece toolset from SEARS.com last week. But no, the sparkplug socket in my new toolset was for American sparkplugs. So I had to go down to the neighborhood Ace hardware. They had an 18mm socket that would fit over my sparkplug, but it was for a 1/2" drive ratchet. My toolkit only has 1/4" and 3/8" ratchets. So I had to buy a 1/2" ratchet along with the socket. Even though the clerk took pity on me and gave me the senior citizen discount (I'm 25) it still cost me $22 all told. Now, you might say that I should have just gotten a 3/8"-to-1/2" drive adaptor instead of springing for the whole ratchet. And to that I say "Shut the hell up, Crackhead, I'm not finished. And besides, I was eventually going to buy a 1/2" ratchet anyway so it's probably not worth it to take it back now."

OK, now I'm rambling. But the point is, Crackhead, that you have done me wrong. Now, I get that you love crack. That is totally understandable. I've heard it is really fun, at first, and quite addictive. What I don't understand is,

YOU ARE A CRACKHEAD. WHY DON'T YOU OWN A CRACKPIPE?

I am an engineer. Do you ever see me shaking down bums in the Loin for a calculator and sliderule? No, you don't. Because engineering is the main thing I do, I went and bought myself a calculator. The main thing you do is crack. How do you get by without a crackpipe? The other crackheads must clown on you non-stop. I mean, the fucking saw you used to saw off my sparkplugs is probably worth five or ten bucks. Why not sell or trade it for a crackpipe? You really haven't put much thought into this, have you?

Please, Crackhead, please don't tell me you sold your crackpipe to buy crack. Even a stupid crackhead such as yourself couldn't possibly be that stupid.

I've decided that taping crackpipes to my motorcycle would be tantamount to appeasement. You have crossed a line, Crackhead - specifically California Street. You have come onto my own street and you have desecrated that which I hold dear. You have stolen from me, and you have caused me to spend the last half hour writing this post instead of engineering shit, and it is concievable, if not likely, that my boss could find out about this and fire me. I am hella pissed at you dude.

Here are my options as I see them:

1. Write a note saying that I have coated both of my sparkplugs in rat poison and tape it to my bike at night. You can thank Tim for that one, it was his idea.

2. Don't write a note, but just coat both sparkplugs in rat poison. This is probably closer to a punishment that would fit your despicable crime. I'm sure this is super illegal and shit, but it's not like anyone is going to miss you, Crackhead. Don't fool yourself.

3. Wait in an alley near my bike armed with my new stainless steel mirror-finish Ace Professional brand 1/2" drive socket wrench, my 18mm sparkplug socket, and my searing rage. It's pretty heavy and well balanced. I am not a large man, but I am angry.

In conclusion, Crackhead, why don't you just do both of us a favor and buy yourself a crackpipe? It will both enhance your crack smoking experience and save me a lot of time and felony assault charges. Think about it.

Sincerely,
Matt

[b]*** If you are not the Crackhead that took my sparkplugs, please disregard this posting *** [/b]

Maine Passes Domestic Partner Law

04.29.04 (3:54 am)   [edit]
(Augusta, Maine) The Maine Senate has passed a domestic partnership registry bill. The measure provides inheritance rights, next-of-kin status, victim's compensation, and guardian and conservator rights to domestic partners. The vote was 18 to 14. The legislation had already passed the House on an 84 to 58 vote.

Gov. John Baldacci has said he will sign the legislation.

"The Senate's enactment vote on this bill reaffirms what we believe is the responsibility of our elected officials in Augusta - to ensure that all Maine citizens are treated fairly and equally under the law," said Betsy Smith, executive director of Equality Maine.

Once the legislation is signed into law it will make Maine the fifth state to pass statewide laws that provide rights to unmarried couples.

"The people of Maine are a step closer to full equality," said Human Rights Campaign President Cheryl Jacques. "More than 6,000 Mainers now have access to important legal protections in the event that their same-sex partner dies. While states like Virginia and Oklahoma recently passed anti-family bills, Maine is moving forward toward giving every family equal rights and responsibilities."

The Purpose of a Blog

04.28.04 (10:57 am)   [edit]
Hey gang,

Dave here---I have been getting e-mails from people who have asked why I don't truly "Blog" as in share my opinions or rant and rave on stuff. So, I will start doing that in an effort to make this section of the site less political. (Although the older I get the more political I get.)

I will not however talk about "nothing" like some blogs I read. Tob over at VividBlurry.com talks about vomiting on himself after a night drinking and other blogs talk about their sexual encounter the night before. Well, not my style. Nope, not me.

But I will talk about some stuff that may or may not be of interest.

Thanks!

ROMNEY MUST BE STOPPED!

04.28.04 (10:32 am)   [edit]
Governor Mitt Romney has ordered city and town clerks in Massachusetts to enforce a 1913 law that requires marriages performed in the state to be legal in the parties' home state, as well. But state records show that clerks usually ignore those rules. In fact, Department of Public Health documents provided to The Boston Globe show that the state repeatedly instructed the clerks to facilitate marriages, rather than enforce laws that might prohibit them, such as the residency requirement. Some of the documents, the Globe reported on Wednesday, explicitly instruct clerks not to check on marriage applicants' legal status and residency.

About 15,000 copies of the first issue of "queer." featuring poetry, fiction, art and essays by students at Harvard and from colleges across the country were distributed last week. According to co-editor Christopher R. Hughes. queer. is dedicated to providing a literary and cultural forum for academic discourse coupled with reflective, informal and artistic meditations on queer issues. Out-of-state couples book Massachusetts ceremonies, sans license

04.27.04 (10:42 am)   [edit]
Gay marriage for in-state couples becomes legal in Massachusetts on May 17, and many of the state's inns and conference facilities have at least one or two same-sex weddings scheduled for summer, many of which are for out-of-state couples. Gov. Mitt Romney recently announced that he intends to enforce an obscure 1913 law that bars unions that would not be legal in the couples' home state. No other state allows gay marriage. John Massery, director of sales at the Seven Hills Resort, said he has been very careful to explain the situation to out-of-state, same-sex couples. "I go over the whole situation with them, and I've said, 'Do you understand that in May, it may not be legal?' But they tell me, 'We're going through with this regardless or whether it is legal or not. We want to have a ceremony,' " says Massery.

Lesbian grandmas ride bikes across America for marriage equality

04.27.04 (10:37 am)   [edit]
Tired of being treated like second-class citizens, Carrie and Elisia Ross-Stone decided to do something. The couple are grandmothers and were married in Canada last fall. They decided that rather than sitting at home and waiting for marriage equality to come to them, they would ride their bicycles from coast-to-coast to gather support for civil marriage equality in cities and towns across the U.S. The couple recently left their winter home in Florida to head west to San Francisco. There they will meet with Assemblyman Mark Leno and join with Marriage Equality California in Golden Gate Park for a Run to the Altar. At noon, after speaking at the rally, Elisia and Carrie will hop on their bikes and ride 3800 miles to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

They live together, flirt together and provide for each other. They've been a couple for 10 years and it's just like any loving relationship - they've even tried to raise a family together. What makes this partnership so special, however, is that the lovers are King penguins - and both are male. Julio and Fabio (known as Fatboy to his friends) are 16 years old and live at Kelly Tarlton's aquarium in Auckland, New Zealand. The couple has been together ever since they came to Tarlton's from San Diego in 1994. Bird curator Rochelle Deane says King penguins are usually quite promiscuous, but Julio and Fatboy are an exclusive couple. They may flirt with the other males a little - Julio tends to get quite jealous of Fatboy's gregarious nature - but they have remained faithful for a decade. "Fatboy and Julio have never shown any interest in females," Rochelle says. "They have eyes only for each other."

Blood Tests For Gay Couples Planning To Wed

04.22.04 (5:06 am)   [edit]
(Boston, Massachusetts) Same-sex couples have begun filing into doctors' offices for health screenings, a requirement to marry in Massachusetts.

The blood tests for syphilis and HIV among other things cannot be done more than 30 days before a couple fills out a marriage application. Same-sex marriage becomes legal in Massachusetts May 17.

More than 150 people have signed up for a premarital clinic program at the Fenway Community Health in Boston. The clinic is in an area with a large gay population.

But, while gay and lesbian couples prepare to marry, conservatives are mounting several last ditch efforts to stop the weddings.

Gov. Mitt Romney has asked the Legislature for special power to ask the state's highest court put a hold on the ruling that legalized gay marriage.
Additionally, the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts has filed a motion with the court for a stay in the marriage ruling.

The League has petitioned a single justice of the Supreme Judicial Court yesterday to delay allowing such marriages for 2 1/2 years.

The Legislature has begun the lengthy process of amending the state constitution. A joint session of the House and Senate recently passed a proposed amendment that would ban gay marriage but permit civil unions. It must be passed a second time in the next session of the legislature and then could go to voters in 2006.

C.J. Doyle, the executive director of the Catholic Action League told the court there would be pandemonium if the weddings go ahead, only to be annulled in two years.

"Legal chaos will be created by the issuance of same-sex `marriage' licenses before the issue goes to the citizens for a vote in 2006," Doyle said in an eight-page petition filed with the court.

The court, he added, "has a duty to avoid this inevitable conflict and confusion by simply staying the entry of its judgment pending the outcome of the amendment process."

Doyle said he is hoping that a single justice will grant a stay.

Mary Bonauto, a lawyer for Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders, called the petition as a "desperate move and a publicity stunt."

"This is an end run around the constitutional process; it's an end run around the court decision," she said.

So far, the high court has shown no interest in compromising on its ruling that the state cannot stop same-sex couples from marrying.

Mass Gov. Vows To Stop Gay Weddings

04.16.04 (2:51 am)   [edit]
Posted: April 15, 2004 2:14 pm. ET

(Boston, Massachusetts) Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney announced Thursday he will seek emergency legislation to stall gay marriages from taking place. Same-sex marriage is scheduled to become legal in Massachusetts on May 17 under a ruling by the state's highest court. (story)

Romney said that the bill is being drafted in his office and would allow him to appoint a special counsel to ask the court stay its ruling on gay marriage until after a constitutional referendum can be held.

The legislature in a joint session last month voted in favor of putting a proposed amendment to the state Constitution that would outlaw same-sex marriage to voters. (story) The measure requires a second vote in the next session. If it passes again, it would go to the voters in 2006.

"Fundamentally, I believe this is a decision which is so important it should be made by the people," Romney told reporters.

"I would like the right to be able to represent the people and my own office before the courts in Massachusetts."

P'Town To Marry Gay Out Of Staters

04.13.04 (4:17 am)   [edit]
(Massachusetts) Despite a state law that says that people from outside Massachusetts whose marriages would be illegal in their home states may not wed in in the Bay State Provincetown is preparing to bend the rules. Or at least turn a blind eye to them, when same-sex marriage becomes legal in Massachusetts May 17.

Officials in the nation's number-one gay summer vacation spot have been deluged with from outside the state by people enquiring about getting married in Provincetown.

They're being told that the town's Board of Selectmen recently voted to permit marriages for out-of-state residents who complete a form stating that their marriage doesn't break any laws, and that officials in Cape Cod town would not investigate to verify the home states or backgrounds listed for gay couples on marriage license applications.

"We've never been the marriage police with heterosexual couples, and we're not about to start with same-sex couples," said town manager, Keith Bergman.

Provincetown has 3,400 year-round residents, but the population swells to as many as 60,000 people in the summer, and the town stands to benefit financially if gay couples see it as a wedding destination.

Gay Domestic Partner Registry Approved In Maine

04.12.04 (3:23 am)   [edit]
(Augusta, Maine) The bill was supposed to give domestic partners a handful of rights and supporters were concerned that even this tiny bit of recognition might fail in the House, but in the end Maine's House of Representatives said it wasn't enough and voted to expand it to include a domestic partner registry.

The legislation would let unmarried same and opposite-sex couples inherit property when a partner dies without leaving a will and guarantees a partner a right in making medical decisions if the other partner is incapacitated.

It also allows a probate court to designate a domestic partner as the person in charge of taking care of the remains of a deceased partner. And, in the event a partner is incapacitated, it allows a judge to designate the healthy partner to make medical decisions

Emotions High As New Hampshire Considers Gay Marriage Ban

04.09.04 (3:08 am)   [edit]
[b](Concord, New Hampshire)[/b] Hundreds of supporters and opponents of same-sex marriage have rallied at the New Hampshire Capitol as lawmakers consider a ban on gay weddings.

The legislation would close what is seen as a loophole in existing law and prevent New Hampshire from recognizing the out-of-state marriages of gay and lesbian couples.

New Hampshire already defines marriage as being between a man and a woman, but makes no reference to other marriages performed outside of the state.

Representatives Hall was filled as the House Judiciary Committee heard more than seven hours of testimony on the bill. Outside the building hundreds more on both sides of the issue staged noisy rallies.

“This legislation says to me and every other gay and lesbian person who lives in New Hampshire, ‘You are not my people and you will not be my people.’ . . .I hope you see this bill for what it is: blatant discrimination,” Ed Butler of Hart’s Location and a board member of New Hampshire Freedom to Marry told the committee.

Church Leaders Denounce Mass Gay Marriage Amendment

04.06.04 (6:21 am)   [edit]
Posted: April 5, 2004 8:01 pm. ET

(Boston, Massachusetts) In an open letter to coincide with the beginning of Easter Week and Passover 600 church leaders have called on Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney to distance himself from attacks on same-sex marriage.

"We reflect the truth that hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people of faith strongly support the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Courts Goodridge decision,'' the letter says.

"To deny gays and lesbians the right to marry in the future would be tantamount to establishing a particular sectarian viewpoint in our civil law. All of our religions will be in great danger if the state begins to define religious sanctity rather than civil law."

The letter was signed by Rabbi Devon Lerner, Co-chair of the Religious Coalition for the Freedom to Marry which is comprised of clergy and faith leaders from 18 different religions including the United Church of Christ, Episcopal, United Methodist, Baptist, Reform and Reconstructionist Judaism and the Unitarian Universalist Associations.

Boston says administrative changes to allow for gay spouses are simple

State agencies have launched preparations for the likelihood that gay couples will marry in Massachusetts, reviewing rules on insurance, retirement benefits, tax filings, and even lottery winnings to determine what must be changed if the Supreme Judicial Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage goes into effect May 17. It appears that making the necessary administrative changes, such as making forms gender-neutral and allowing same-sex couples to file joint tax returns in 2005 - can be accomplished fairly easily. "As far as we can see, it's not a big issue," says state Treasurer Timothy P. Cahill.

Savage Advice

04.03.04 (10:16 am)   [edit]
=http://www.gaynewengland.net target=_blank [image]gaynewengland_4946 44825.gif[/image]Our eight-year relationship seems to have hit a slump, emotionally and physically. This is the only relationship I have ever had. We are both faithful to each other. For the last year or so, the affection has dwindled except for the "good night," "off to work" and "home from work" kisses. We have also been lower-sex-drive men through most of our relationship (we are OK with that), but that too has dwindled. I worship this man, and our relationship is the most important part of my life. I value our relationship every day I am alive, and will do everything -- anything, whatever it takes to make it grow, reflourish, nurture, continue, et cetera. But I am at a loss as where to begin. Sexually, I don't want us to have sex outside the relationship. Emotionally, I need to be more upbeat and confident. Any ideas?

RS

[i]Sure: Tell your boyfriend what you've just told everyone here. You've hit a slump, you're still in love with him and you'd like to tough this slump out. He's important to you, and you want to get through this. Slumps are a natural part of any LTR, RS, and guys in LTRs shouldn't be afraid to acknowledge the occasional, unavoidable slump. Admitting that you're in a slump will not, as some fear, make it permanent or lead to a breakup. While a couple can ignore a slump and cross their fingers and hope that they pull out of it -- and, in many cases, that's just what happens -- standing around waiting for an unacknowledged slump to end is often more stressful than toughing out an admitted slump together (and, therefore, more likely to lead to a breakup). First things first: Tell him how you feel -- good and bad. Good: You still love him and you want to stay with him. Bad: You're in a slump. Then make sure you're both on the same page. Don't force yourself to pretend you're not slumping, and don't force yourselves to pretend to pull out of the slump before it's actually over. But you should ID whatever you can do that might help hurry things along -- for some couples, that means taking a trip together; for others, it means spending some time apart. Good luck, kiddo. [/i]

A while back, a female friend of mine and I met a boy together, and we both immediately started liking him. Right now, we are both head over heels for him. When we first met, he said he wasn't gay but might be a little bisexual -- so I got adventurous, and a few times we made out and I got some groping action. Then my female friend told me she really liked him and asked me to back off, so I did. We all were still good friends at this point, and remained so for quite some time. Then one night, they decided to stay over at my house -- and that's when things got really messed up. We are all very friendly with each other in a nonsexual way, but an onlooker would think we were screwing. We were all in the bed, and I started groping him in a joking way. But after a while, I felt like it wasn't joking any more, so I switched sides with her so I wouldn't be tempted. Then I wake to find out that they hadn't gone all the way but they got close. I freaked, and she and I talked and decided that we should take away all limits we had put up about going after him. The next night, he was not even physically interested in me any more, but they finally finished what they started and had sex. Now because I don't think we are fairly matched any more, I want it to all stop, but she said it has gone too far and won't back off like I did for her. I think if I hadn't stopped when she told me to a few months ago, I could have been in some kind of relationship with him by now. Now I feel cheated. I am physically ill from the whole situation.

Sad and Sick

Just reading your letter -- which I had to do seven or eight times before I could figure out exactly what the hell was going on -- gave me a splitting headache, SAS. And I'm afraid I don't have any advice to show for all my effort. Basically, this is all I got: One day you won't be a teenager anymore -- or if you aren't one now, one day you'll stop acting like one -- and you won't waste your time on this kind of drama anymore. Or on the kind of guys who aren't out and don't have their shit together. That day will come sooner if you resolve to learn the lesson in this mess, which is this: Don't waste your time chasing after guys who claim to be a "little bit bisexual." Odds are good that this guy was just using you. By allowing you to grope him, he was more interesting, dangerous and appealing to the women who witnessed the groping -- i.e., your girlfriend. Being a little bit bisexual is considered a whole lot hot in some circles these days, and guys who aren't really bi or gay will mess around with other guys because it drives a certain subset of alternachicks absolutely wild.

Short version: Is there ever justification for staying in a relationship you know has to end? Longer version: I was very young when the relationship started three years ago, and I didn't know what I wanted (he was my first love and my first sexual experience). I don't love him now. I wish I did. He's sweet, gorgeous, and almost everything you could ask for. What's missing is that intellectual side that would allow us to talk about politics and the rest of what I plan to devote my life to (yes, my career is more important than any guy can ever be -- which isn't fair to any guy). The problem is that he speaks (I think very seriously) of suicide when I tell him I want to end our relationship. I back off, because I understand his perspective and feel somewhat responsible. He left the drug scene he was very much a part of when our relationship was beginning (and so lost all of his friends), and he is right: Without me, he will be very alone (his dependence on me has become insufferable from my perspective). I'm moving out of country for my Ph.D. in September; he is willing to wait. And I'm almost inclined to allow him that illusion in the hope he'll be in a better position to accept this some time down the road. Being alone will force him to build new relationships (though I worry he'll go back to "the scene" -- and maybe that wouldn't even be so bad?).

Despairing Somewhere

[i]If you can't bring yourself to dump this guy because he keeps threatening to off himself and/or start using drugs again if you do, DS, you had better be prepared to stay with this guy for the rest of your life. Because the threats aren't going to stop -- why should they? They've worked wonders so far. Sorry, kiddo, you just have to bite the bullet and dump this guy. Your soon-to-be-ex is engaging in emotional blackmail, and your only option is to call his bluff -- and he is almost certainly bluffing. Rarely do people who threaten to off themselves if they're dumped actually follow through and do the deed. He'll keep trotting out the threat, however, for as long as he thinks it works. If you want to wait until you're on another continent to cut him loose, and thereby avoid the drama, feel free. But the sooner you dump him, the sooner you'll be free -- and the sooner he'll have to get his shit together. [/i]
