George Michael regrets the way people learned he was gay

05.27.04 (2:01 am)   [edit]

Gay pop icon George Michael regrets that the truth about his sexuality was unearthed in a scandalous manner. The singer admitted on the Oprah Winfrey show that he would have preferred to reveal his sexual preferences himself in front of a journalist. Instead, Michael was arrested for performing "a lewd act" in a park toilet in Los Angeles in 1998. The incident depressed him greatly. "I just plummeted into deep, deep depression. I mean my God, why didn't I just sit with a journalist and say, 'I am gay.'"

(Provincetown, Massachusetts) Provincetown Wednesday put the brakes on issuing marriage licenses to gay couples from outside Massachusetts.

Tuesday night in a closed door meeting with the town's lawyer Selectmen voted to temporarily suspend issuing marriage license forms to out-of-state couples.

The move follows similar decisions Monday by three other communities which were also defying Gov. Mitt Romney's ban on allowing gays from outside the Commonwealth from marrying in Massachusetts. (story)

MTV ended the long wait for a national cable TV network Tuesday. Called LOGO the cable net had been expected for more than a year.

The station was to have been called Outlook and MTV parent Viacom had planned to launch it last year. The company retooled the concept and put it under the MTV banner with the new name. It will go on the air February 17, 2005.

The new channel will be advertiser-supported, targeting primarily gays and lesbians, 25-49, and will provide a mix of original and acquired programming.

LOGO will launch in markets across America, including Los Angeles, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta and San Francisco, through national cable operators, including Time Warner Cable, RCN. The company says that additional distributors that will be announced in the coming weeks.

"Creating a network specifically for the LGBT community is something we've wanted to do for a long, long time, and it's an idea we feel is overdue," said Tom Freston, chairman and CEO of MTV Networks. "Despite our nation's progress on civil rights and the growing visibility of gay people in business, society and even in television programming -- what has been missing is a full-time home for this important and influential audience on television. We have big plans and hopes for LOGO and I'm thrilled to finally announce its arrival."

Market researchers estimate the gay and lesbian population at 15 million adults, with a projected buying power of $485 billion and it is increasingly the target for many Fortune 500 companies.

"LOGO is all about identity: the individual and collective identities present in the gay and lesbian community that are amazingly diverse, but are joined by similar points of view and sensibilities," said Judy McGrath, president of the MTV Networks Music and Comedy Group.

Connecticut Becomes 8th State To Protect Trans Citizens

05.26.04 (2:13 am)   [edit]
=http://www.gaynewengland.net target=_blank [image]gaynewengland_1512 52299.jpg[/image]

(Hartford, Connecticut) Connecticut Gov. John Rowland has signed legislation making the state the eighth in the nation to include trans people in hate crimes law.

Connecticut's hate crimes statute already covered violence based on actual or perceived race, religion, ethnicity, or sexual orientation. The law provides for increased criminal penalties when a person causes physical injury or property damage because the victim is a member of a class protected by the statute.

"Violence based on these personal characteristics is not only a heinous crime against an individual, but it also creates an environment of fear and intimidation for the entire transgender community," said Jennifer Levi, and attorney with the Boston-based Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders who lobbied on behalf of the legislation.

"This law sends an unequivocal message to police, prosecutors, courts and the general public, that targeting individuals for violence solely because they are transgender or disabled is intolerable," Levi said.

The National Transgender Advocacy Coalition called on the US Congress to enact similar legislation.

"The National Transgender Advocacy Coalition has long recognized the need for a meaningful deterrent to hate-based violence in the United States," said Vanessa Edwards Foster, Chair of NTAC.

"We are also painfully aware of the effects of such violence on the transgender community, as well as the disproportionate amount of such violence directed at the transgender community."

Connecticut joins California, Missouri, Minnesota, [b]Vermont,[/b] Pennsylvania, New Mexico, and Hawaii, as states including transgender persons within hate crimes law.

Now it's time to get Trans protection for the rest of New England![/b]

Madonna Twirls Rifle, Lifts Up Her Kilt At Tour Opener

05.25.04 (1:10 pm)   [edit]
05.25.2004 3:46 PM EDT
[b]
"There's a lot of mixed messages. It would take me hours to explain them. Come back and see the show again." Madonna[/b]

=http://www.bostongaybars.com target=_blank [image]gaynewengland_1300 778389.jpg[/image]

Inglewood, CA So how does Madonna reinvent herself on her Re-Invention Tour? It's nearly impossible to count the ways.

Actually, "re-inflame" might be the better word, as seemingly every second of her extravagant two-hour performance features something rousing, whether in the elaborate sets, the stunning choreography, the massive video screens or the music itself.

One minute she's provocatively vogueing with her male dancers while homoerotic images flash behind her, the next she's in fatigues, twirling a rifle to the sounds of explosions and helicopters. In the blink of an eye she goes from being strapped in an electric chair to pulling up her kilt to spell the word "FREEDOM" with glitter letters on her and her dancers' underpants.

"There's a lot of mixed messages," Madonna admitted Monday backstage at the sold-out Great Western Forum, where she launched the tour. "It would take me hours to explain them. Come back and see the show again."

At $315 for a decent seat (plus $20 to $60 for parking, $45 to $60 for a T-shirt and $10 to $18 for a drink), that's a luxury few can afford, but there's certainly enough to the show that seeing it several times would make for different experiences. Like the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy with more sex.

Monday's show was divided into five segments, beginning with what resembled a Renaissance-era ball, until Madonna and her dancers walked on their hands and feet the arched-back way (ouch!) during a breakdown in the opening number, "Vogue."

The band, tucked away in the back corners for most of the show, seamlessly transitioned from "Nobody Knows Me" to "Frozen" before a giant catwalk lowered from the ceiling and a circular section of the stage turned to reveal stacks of TVs.

Dancers dressed as soldiers, as well as nuns and other religious figures, joined Madge for a rendition of "American Life" made extra stark by images of war flashing on the various screens.

Livening up the mood, Madonna asked, "Come on, boys, do you believe in love?" as she launched into "Express Yourself." After donning a guitar for "Burning Up," she segued into an almost hard-rock version of "Material Girl."

While Madonna exited for her third costume change, the stage turned again to reveal a circuslike atmosphere complete with a half-pipe and mohawked skateboarder. Various dancers, from a breakdancer to a tap dancer, strutted their stuff to the music of "Hollywood," setting the tone for lighthearted, showgirl-like performances of "Hanky Panky" and "Deeper and Deeper."

With Madonna still in her sexy corset, the mood suddenly turned for "Die Another Day," which included imagery of an old man on his deathbed and ended with Madonna singing on an electric chair as it raised high above the stage.

"That's my favorite part," Madonna said later. "I like the idea of being restrained. I'm singing about all the things I could have had, but my ego got in the way and I destroyed all my happiness."

Swings dropped from the ceiling and three acrobatic dancers got their slither on for the next transition, which found Madonna in a black Stella McCartney suit to sing "Nothing Fails" and a funked-up "Don't Tell Me."

"That was just a warm-up," she announced. "I don't want to see anyone sitting down the rest of the show. I'm giving my all and that's what I want back."

With that, she launched into "Like a Prayer," accentuated by footage of a gospel choir. Images of Jesus and Mary faded away only to be replaced by impoverished kids. To accompany the heartbreaking photos, Madonna covered John Lennon's "Imagine."

"I wanted to make a statement," Madonna said after the show. "I feel like that song is the ultimate peace song. ... And it was important to have the stuff going on behind me, the pictures, and really hit home that children are involved in all this chaos and destruction. I don't think people remember that all the time."

As she sang the words "We can live as one," Madonna held up one finger and was lowered beneath the stage for her final costume change.

A bagpipe player and a drumline, all decked out in kilts, took the stage playing a beat that morphed into "Into the Groove." As Missy Elliott (also in Scottish attire) appeared on the screens to rap her part of the remix, Madonna and her dancers used wooden posts to enhance their hopscotch-style routine.

After donning a "Kabbalahists Do It Better" T-shirt for "Papa Don't Preach" (a play off the "Italians Do It Better" shirt she wore in the 1986 video), she slowed it down with "Crazy for You." "This is for all my fans who've stuck by me the last 20 years," she said.

The stage made one last turn, this time revealing lighted staircases surrounding a DJ, who mixed and scratched through "Music" while Madonna and her dancers transformed the arena into a steamy nightclub.

For the finale, the catwalk lowered again and Madonna danced to the front, singing "Holiday" as confetti exploded from all corners of the building, covering the enthusiastic audience.

Christina Aguilera, who had watched quietly from her seat most of the show, even cheered. And why not? All that excitement and she didn't even have to make out with Madonna.

The Re-Invention Tour plays the Forum again Tuesday (May 25) and Wednesday before moving on through the rest of the United States and then Canada and Europe before ending in September.

CHEERS to the students of Suffolk University!

05.25.04 (1:05 pm)   [edit]
(Boston, Massachusetts) The graduating class at Boston's Suffolk University showed its distain for Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney Sunday with about a third of the class of 2004 standing and turning their backs on him.

Other students wore blue and yellow arm bands denouncing the Governor for his stand against same-sex marriage. Still others wore rainbow tassels from their mortar boards while other students refused to attend the commencement at all, opting instead to go to a diversity celebration.

At least two students at the graduation ceremony were escorted out when they heckled the governor.

[b]Another student called Romney "one of the most biased politicians of the day."[/b]

(Boston, Massachusetts) Provincetown was the only community in Massachusetts allowing out-of-state same-sex couples to marry Tuesday, and it too may end the practice tonight.

Worcester, Somerville and Springfield ended their protest against Gov. Mitt Romney's direction that it was illegal to allow gay couples from outside Massachusetts to wed after Attorney General Thomas Reilly Friday issued a notice to the dissident towns that his reading of a 1913 law concurs with the governor's opinion. (story)

Somerville and Springfield stopped issuing the licenses immediately. Worcester continued giving out licenses on the weekend (story) Provincetown's Board of Selectmen will meet tonight to decide whether to stop issuing the marriage licenses or fight the state in court.

Romney, a Republican and devout Mormon, has fought same-sex marriage since the state's highest court overturned laws preventing gays from tying the knot. After being thwarted by the legislature, the courts, and Reilly, Romney turned his attention to same-sex couples from outside the state.

Laura Bush Told Discuss The Economy Not Changing The Constitution

05.25.04 (12:52 pm)   [edit]
(Washington) Laura Bush was told Tuesday to focus on the economy and other issues Americans are concerned about rather than enter a divisive national debate about amending the Constitution to stop same-sex couples from marrying.

Last week the First Lady told the Boston Globe that gay marriage "an issue that a lot of people have a lot of trouble with."

Stopping just short of endorsing a proposed federal constitutional amendment to ban same-sex union that is supported by her husband, Mrs Bush said that the American people, not a few judges, should have a voice in setting the important social policy.

Her comments came as the first legal gay weddings were taking place in Boston.

In a letter today to the First Lady Human Rights Campaign President Cheryl Jacques there are more pressing issues facing the country.

"I do not believe, at this moment in our nation's history, that the American people want a conversation about amending the Constitution on this issue," Jacques wrote. "Instead, they want a discussion about the issues you care about most, like education. And they want more focus on the challenges that face America every day, from the cost of gasoline to our foreign policy and economic challenges."

Lauper's color lifts KISS show

05.24.04 (4:07 am)   [edit]
MANSFIELD -- For the first three hours of this year's KISS Concert, it seemed as if the most inspired moments might come from those in the crowd concocting creative ways to stay warm in the cold.

Just as it appeared that T-shirts worn as mufflers and sweatbands swaddled around frigid sandal-clad feet might provide Saturday's most memorable images, Cyndi Lauper hit the stage with a fury and reminded everybody what this daylong show is supposed to be about -- great performances.

Lauper, whose popularity peaked years before many in the audience were born, displayed more vigor and enthusiasm than the day's seven previous acts combined. Technical problems threatened to undermine Lauper, but once things were straightened out, she tore into "Shine." She went straight into the audience, singing a good part of the song standing on a chair, and was the first performer to get most of the audience on their feet.

Sounding great and looking better than ever, Lauper closed her set with an exuberant "Girls Just Want to Have Fun," yet the high note was her emotional reading of her 1986 hit, "True Colors." She dedicated the song to all the gay couples who were married in Massachusetts last week. When she reached the line, "So don't be afraid," the music stopped, and she thrust her fist in the air for 30 seconds, as the audience cheered.

Mass. City Continues To Ignore Out-Of-State Gay Wedding Ban

05.24.04 (1:42 am)   [edit]
(Worcester, Massachusetts) The city of Worcester is continuing to issue marriage licenses to out-of-state same-sex couples despite a warning from Gov. Mitt Romney and Attorney General Thomas Riley.

The move pits Worcester city clerk David Rushford against the two most power elected officials in the state.

Worcester was one of four municipalities which decided a week ago to issue licenses to same-sex couples from outside Massachusetts even though Gov. Romney, a Republican, warned the marriages would be illegal and would not be registered. (story) The other cities were Provincetown, Somerville, and Springfield.

Friday, acting on instructions from Romney, Riley, a Democrat, reminded the four cities that under a 1913 law marriage licenses cannot be given to couples whose union would be illegal in their home state. (story)

The law had been enacted when interracial marriage was legal in Massachusetts but illegal elsewhere in the country.

One couple who received a marriage license despite Riley's reminder was James Reeves and Marc Epstein of Baltimore.

The clerk's office approved their marriage license Friday, only hours after receiving Riley's warning.

Their marriage was performed Friday night by Justice of the Peace Lisa Thomas, who is also an assistant city clerk. Just before the ceremony began Thomas called Rushford to be sure it was OK, and was given the go-ahead.

"We always knew there was going to be a cloud of suspicion over this, but we felt if we didn't try, we would have regretted it for the rest of our lives," Reeves, 26, told the Baltimore Sun.

Riley was not available to comment on the marriage, but most legal minds in the state say the issue of out-of-state gay marriage will be tested in the courts, and the 1913 ban is likely to be overturned.

In an interview with the Sun prior to their wedding, Reeves and Epstein said they wanted a marriage certificate so they could return home and press for specific legal rights, such as spousal health care coverage or filing joint tax returns

Newly elected and newly married

05.22.04 (9:57 am)   [edit]
Lane Bourn jumped two large hurdles of American life this week, getting elected as a member of Rowley, Massachusetts, Board of Selectmen, and getting married to his longtime partner, Stuart Wells. The two already had a civil union from Vermont but were in line this Monday to get married to make it legal in their home state. Bourn and Wells already had a party celebrating their committment to each other and plan on just a short party for their friends. Bourn hopes to work on tax issues as selectman, protecting property rights and encouraging local agriculture.

Massachusetts....The Wedding's Continue....

05.21.04 (2:18 am)   [edit]
The Rev. Kim Crawford Harvie had barely retreated down the aisle with her wife of five minutes when she donned her white robes and got back to work, helping to marry dozens of other gay couples during a full day of back-to-back weddings at the Arlington Street Church.

``OK, I'm ready for my next couple!'' said Harvie, 46, senior minister at the Unitarian Universalist church since 1989, who married her partner of seven years, Kem Morehead, in a ceremony officiated by Rabbi Howard Berman.

So began a marathon day of weddings at the church in Boston's Back Bay which planned to marry nearly 50 couples on Thursday and at chapels, parks and on beaches across the state, as a mandatory three-day waiting period expired for couples who obtained the nation's first gay marriage license applications on Monday. (In Depth Coverage) Dozens of other couples that got a court waiver of the waiting period have already been married.

The new round of nuptials came as Gov. Mitt Romney took the first steps toward blocking city and town clerks from issuing marriage licenses to out-of-state gay couples, which the Republican governor says is prohibited by state law.(story) Attorney General Tom Reilly said the governor's office was referring a ``handful'' of cases to him regarding out-of-state couples who received licenses, but Reilly would not say whether he planned to prosecute the couples or the clerks.

The legal maneuverings on Beacon Hill didn't stop gay couples including some from out of state from getting married on Thursday.

Provincetown, one of four municipalities that have openly defied the governor by issuing licenses to out-of-state couples, hosted the weddings of couples from as far away as Florida.

Gay marriage in Massachusetts - still celebrating

05.18.04 (3:56 am)   [edit]
One lesbian couple, partners for 33 years, married on a wind-swept Cape Cod beach. Another pair wed on Boston's Beacon Hill to a jubilant chorus of "Here Come the Brides." They were among hundreds of gay and lesbian couples who obtained marriage licenses Monday as Massachusetts, obeying a landmark order from its high court, became the first state to allow same-sex weddings. Many of the couples who obtained marriage licenses paid a hefty fee to waive the normal three-day waiting period, and exchanged vows as quickly as feasible. Ceremonies ranged from brisk city-hall procedures to elaborate church weddings, complete with champagne, cake and bridesmaids.

(Boston, Massachusetts) As gay and lesbian couples across Massachusetts prepare to marry, most say they want to tie the knot in their hometowns.

In informal survey of 493 gay and lesbian couples planning to get marriage licenses shows that same-sex weddings will take place in 133 cities and towns across the Commonwealth.

The majority, 66, will be in Boston with another 39 across the river in Cambridge and a dozen in Provincetown. But marriages will also take place in Northampton, Somerville, Brookline, Worcester, Newton, Arlington, Springfield and Watertown.

Jeff Parker (42) and Luiz Duque (33) of South Walpole ? together for eight years - are planning a ceremony in their church, Unity Church in North Easton.

The survey, by the Freedom to Marry Coalition and MassEquality also shows that about half of the respondents ? many of whom are planning formal wedding ceremonies ? plan to be married by members of the clergy.

Ministers in the Unitarian Universalist Church, the MCC, some congregational pastors, and Reform rabies, are officiating.

John Budron (51) and Timothy Fitzgerald (44) of Milton ? together for 17 years ? will be married in their local Unitarian church. On the other hand, Tobin Wirt (49) and Robert King (48) of Sandwich will conduct their ceremony at their home with Justice of the Peace Susan Walker.

Slightly more than a third of the couples will marry this week. Another 13% plan to marry by the end of May 2004, while another 46% of respondents plan to marry before the end of the year. Only 3% indicated plans to marry in 2005 and 2006.

Massachusetts has a three-day waiting period between the time a couple is granted a marriage license and the date they can marry. Only 20 couples indicated they plan to seek a waiver from a judge and marry on Monday.

Couples across the Commonwealth are joyful, happy and grateful that for the first time in U.S. history, we can receive the critical legal rights and protections that come only through marriage,? said Marty Rouse, Campaign Coordinator for MassEquality. ?May 17th is a historic day: it?s the day that marks a new chapter of equality for gay and lesbian families.?

May 17th--Gay Marriage WILL happen in Massachusetts!

The Supreme Court has refused to block Massachusetts from allowing gay marriages beginning Monday, removing the last legal impediment to what will be the nation's first state-sanctioned same-sex weddings. The justices declined without comment to intervene and block clerks from issuing marriage licenses to gay couples in Massachusetts. The state's highest court ruled in November that the state Constitution allows gay couples to marry, and declared that the process would begin Monday. The Supreme Court's decision, in an emergency appeal filed Friday by gay marriage opponents, does not address the merits of the claim that the state Supreme Judicial Court overstepped its bounds with the landmark decision.

P'Town To Ignore Ban On Out-Of-State Gay Marriages

05.11.04 (8:35 am)   [edit]
(Provincetown, Massachusetts) Provincetown's Board of Selectmen voted Monday night to ignore a directive from Gov. Mitt Romney and allow gay couples who reside outside Massachusetts to marry when same-sex marriage becomes legal in the state next Monday.

The board decided to allow any couple who applies for a license to be granted one as long as the parties attest that they know of no legal impediment to their union.

Romney's order to clerks across the state not to issue licenses to same-sex couples from outside Massachusetts is based on a 1913 law that says marriage licenses cannot be issued to out-of-state couples if their marriages would be "void" in the couples' home states. The until now seldom used law dates back to a period when interracial marriage was illegal.

The directive came as a severe blow to the owners of inns and other tourist spots in the popular gay resort at the tip of Cape Cod who were hoping to cash in on a stampede of gay couples from across the country.

A spokesperson for the governor said that clerks violating the law could be prosecuted. Under state law, officials who issue a license "knowing that parties are prohibited" can face up to a $500 fine or a prison sentence of up to a year.

Meanwhile a Catholic political action group Monday asked the US District Court to prevent same-sex couples in Massachusetts from marrying. (story) The Catholic Action League argues that the state high court violated the U.S. Constitution!

Star Trek fans finally see a gay character, unofficially

05.08.04 (4:36 pm)   [edit]
Star Trek fans have been waiting for thirty some years for the show to include a gay or lesbian character. Since the show aired in 1966, it has always been on the forefront of social issues like race and ethnic stereotyping, even showing the first prime-time interracial kiss. As of yet, there has not been a single gay or lesbian character on the show, despite years of fans writing in hoping for one. Fans have now taken the matter in their own hands, producing a home-written and filmed series called Hidden Frontiers, with a gay character. The shows, available on the internet at hiddenfrontier.org, have been popular with other fans, and fit very well with the rest of the Star Trek universe.

Drag Queen Gang Terrorizes South

05.07.04 (5:16 am)   [edit]
=http://www.bostongaybars.com target=_blank [image]gaynewengland_4672 6114.jpg[/image]

(Birmingham, Alabama) When a queen goes to a gala she wants to arrive in style, and that say Birmingham police is what led a gang of marauding drag queens on a crime wave that targeted exclusive car dealerships in five southern states and Michigan.

Police tell 365Gay.com that as many as a dozen drag queens were members of the gang. They would descend on car dealerships, scope out the best of the best on the lots, and then steal them to drive to drag beauty pageants throughout the South.

About a dozen cars have been recovered but nearly 20 more are still unaccounted for. In one of the cars found by police near a gay club the trophies were still in the backseat.

"It was all about arriving in grand style at these pageants," Sgt B. A. Treadeway of the Birmingham Police Department told 365Gay.com.

Among the cars stolen were Cadillac's, Lincolns, Mercedes Benz, BMWs, and a Lexus. The cars have all disappeared on Thursdays or Fridays.

Treadway said that a group of the drag queens would go into a dealership. One would keep the salesman busy with questions while the others would find the key rack and steal a new car off the lot. Often the dealerships did not even know a car had been stolen until it had been recovered, without plates, by police.

"We're asking all dealerships in the area to check their inventory," Treadway said.

One dealership has lost three cars to the gang, including a 2004 Nissan 350ZX Roadster Convertible and a 2003 Acura 3.2TL S Type.

One hapless salesman couldn't believe the beautiful woman who kept him busy was actually a man. [b] "God, I feel so foolish," the man, who asked that his name not be used told 365Gay.com. "I mean she, he, was gorgeous. I was trying to get enough nerve to ask her for a date."[/b]
Others in the group are not so beautiful though.

"One is 6' 4' weighs 175 pounds and was last seen wearing a dress with a V cut back and pumps," Treadway said. "Most are very convincing, though."

Police throughout the south have been busy over the past month reading area gay newspapers to follow the drag beauty pageant circuit. As well they have keeping an eye on gay clubs.

The added surveillance has resulted in the arrest of three members of the gang. Two 18 year olds and a 22 year old are charged with receiving stolen property. But, the "main players" in the scam remain at large.

It's terrible this man does this in the name of GOD

[b]Phelps to protest scholarship winner's graduation[/b]

Fred Phelps and the two or three family members he calls a church plan to picket City High School's graduation ceremony in Iowa City, Iowa, because one of the grads has won a scholarship named for murdered gay college student Matthew Shepard. Ilse Bendorf, 16, a City High senior, is a 2004 recipient of the Matthew Shepard Scholarship. City High Principal Mark Hanson shook his head and sighed as he read a Phelps news release Wednesday. Ilse's mom said, "Our community rises above this kind of hate group. Their unconscionable agenda underscores the need for families, schools and communities to provide safe environments for all youths."

Gone but not forgotten Bars and Clubs.....

05.05.04 (11:21 am)   [edit]
=http://www.gaynewengland.net target=_blank [image]gaynewengland_1194 04844.jpg[/image]

Big Ups to the people over at http://www.GayBoston.ws
who came up with this list of Gone but not forgotten Boston Gay Bars.......

[b]Do you remember.... ?[/b]

Not sure what the name was, but I was told there used to be a 24-hour diner where gay men frequented back in the 70s and 80s. It was located across the Boston Common on Boylston Street, where now the Four Seasons is located. Anyone remember this place?

119 Merrimac
This dive bar is no longer there... for the building is currently being regutted and converted into offices or condos. The owners of 119 moved its business toward Downtown Crossing at Pi Alley. It's called, "The Alley." Go figure.

Bobby's
Located near the Fleet Center (Boston Garden) on Friend Street, near Haymarket and North End. The dance floor was small, and during the weekend mornings it was a place to have brunch (with omelettes made to order). Now it's some Tapas bar filled with... ugh... breeders.

Buddies
I only remember Buddies when it was located on Stuart Street in the Theatre District. I remember sneaking in (I was underaged) with friends and had a blast. It was before my time when Buddies was located in the Back Bay... on Boylston Street. Shortly after Buddies closed, the bar was then transformed into F/X... which was very short-lived. The Stuart Street location is now Boston's best killer dance club: BUZZ.

Chaps
What stands in its place is Trinity Place... more luxury condos. It was the best dance club before BUZZ, located in Copley Square, across from the Copley Westin Hotel. The alley behind Chaps was the playground during Boston Pride, and the place was packed year after year. Chaps then moved to the Theatre District, and then it changed its name to VAPOR. Now, according to many friends, Vapor has slowly emerged into a bi/straight club. It was really never the same when Chaps moved from its Copley location.

Cobalt
A short-lived dance club on Lincoln Street in the Leather District near South Station. With the 24-hour diners and Chinatown nearby, one would have thought that gay nightlife would thrive... nope.

Destinations
Located near Haymarket in downtown Boston. Don't remember much about this place... I think it thrived back in the early to mid-1980s.

GladDay Bookstore
Okay, it's not a bar or club, but it was perhaps the most popular, longest-surviving gay bookstore in Boston. It was located across from the Boston Public Library, on Boylston Street. I believe the management moved to a new location in the Leather District, on 92A South Street, and renamed the bookstore, Calamus Bookstore. Above the bookstore is the new location of Marquis de Sade, that used to be on Berkeley Street in the South End.

Joy
Another short-lived bar on Washington Street in Downtown Crossing that featured gay night (Wednesdays). Now it's totally straight... and the name has been changed to FELT.

The Loft
This after-hours club was located in the Back Bay (behind Club Cafe). It was Saturdays and Sundays, from 12:30 a.m. to dawn. Saturday mornings had a mixed crowd, and Sunday mornings were all-gay. The Loft had three bass-thumping dance floors and a roofdeck. Summer nights were awesome. The Loft has been closed for almost ten years now, but now RISE has returned (after a fire that closed the club for over a year) as the after-hours hot spot for gay club-goers.

Luxor/JOX
It's now "Upstairs at Dedo." Located in Bay Village, across from the Boston Park Plaza.

Napoleon Bar
Once touted as Boston's oldest gentlemen bar, Napoleon Bar was situated in Bay Village on Pinckney Street. Napoleon's consisted of two piano bars, and a dance floor upstairs, called Josephine's. It was closed a number of years ago and it has since turned into condominiums.

Playland
Essex Street, near Chinatown. This place was SCARY!!! The building is being torn down and more luxury condos are going to be in its place.

Safari Club
Boston once had a sex club. The city closed it down, after someone reported illegal activities to the authorities. It was located on Wareham Street in the South End. If you want to go to a sex club now, you'll have to drive down to Providence, Rhode Island.

Sporters
This was a leather/levi neighborhood bar on Cambridge Street. Correct me if I'm wrong, but was there a sling that used to hang inside that place?

Venus DeMilo
Located on Lansdowne Street near Fenway Park. Wednesday nights. No more.

This one made me laugh.

05.04.04 (3:25 pm)   [edit]
Gay partygoers apparently hoping to catch a glimpse of nude sunbathers crowded on one side of a floating barge, prompting the ship to capsize and dump all 60 people into Lake Travis near Austin, Texas. Two people were hospitalized with minor injuries Sunday after the rented double-decker barge sank near Hippie Hollow, a lakeside park and the only public nude beach in the state. The accident occurred during Splash Day, a semiannual event hosted at the clothing-optional area by the Austin Tavern Guild, a gay and lesbian bar association.

This story kind of pissed me off....

05.04.04 (3:23 pm)   [edit]
I mean, I think it was cool that he let them know what section of town was considered "gay". Why? Because, we all like to live in communities that are accepting and safe, why not our own section. (I wish I did!)

Here's the story...

Real estate agent punished for steering couple to gay part of town
Real estate expert Robert Inman writes of an agent who was censured for "steering" clients to a certain neighborhood, a violation of fair housing laws. The agent told a gay couple they "might feel more comfortable" if they focused on a part of town that's widely known for its gay population. The agent thought he was providing the couple with local expertise. The gay couple, however, reported him to the state. The state settled for a 90-day "restriction": The agent can keep selling homes, but he also must attend "gay-awareness" classes. Ironically, the agent is very aware of gay issues; he's gay.

Cambridge, Mass., plans to offer marriage licenses just after midnight May 17

05.04.04 (3:16 pm)   [edit]
If you want to try for the first same-sex marriage license in Massachusetts, it looks as though you are going to Cambridge. That city plans to accept marriage applications from same-sex couples at the stroke of midnight on May 17, giving it a jump on gay-friendly communities such as Provincetown and Northampton. Cambridge officials said plans are underway for music to be played and wedding cake to be served at a City Hall celebration at 11 p.m. on May 16, followed at midnight by the clerk's office opening its doors to the first same-sex couples in Massachusetts to file forms announcing their intention to marry.

Boston Weighs Marrying All Gay Couples Who Apply

05.03.04 (3:33 am)   [edit]
(Boston, Massachusetts) The city of Boston may refuse to adhere to a directive from Governor Mitt Romney that only gay couples who reside in Massachusetts can be issued marriage licenses.

Same-sex marriage becomes legal in the state next month, and Romney a foe of gay marriage has told clerks across the state that a 1913 law says that they cannot issue licenses to out-of-state couples if their marriages would be "void" in the couples' home states.
