BOSTON-- Gov. Mitt Romney insists his attention is focused squarely on Massachusetts these days, but his itinerary has recently taken him far afield on a series of trips that have raised his national profile as well as rumors about his political ambitions.
Last week, the Republican governor was in Washington to testify to Congress about Massachusetts’ experience with gay marriage.
Two weeks ago, it was his duties as a Bush appointee to a homeland security advisory council that brought him to the nation’s capital. Before that, he spoke to a group of Orange County Republican activists in California while out there trying to woo biotech companies.
In April, the former Salt Lake City Olympics chief traveled to Michigan to preside over the grand opening of the Bush-Cheney headquarters in his native state

Kerry says he'll fly to D.C. for marriage amendment vote if needed
06.24.04 (2:19 pm) [edit]
Democratic presidential hopeful John Kerry said he'd leave the campaign trail and be back in Washington if his vote were needed on the Senate floor to block a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. "I've told (Senate Minority Leader) Tom Daschle that if my vote is ever needed, he just has to call me and I'll come,'' but it's impossible to predict when that will happen, the Massachusetts senator said.

Republican Former Governor Officiates At Gay Wedding
06.23.04 (2:29 am) [edit]
(Boston, Massachusetts) While current Republican Governor Mitt Romney was in Washington telling a Senate hearing that if Congress doesn't pass a constitutional amendment gay marriage will "spread like wildfire" across the nation, former Massachusetts GOP Governor William F. Weld was officiating at the gay marriage of his old college roommate.
Mitchell Adams, Weld's closest friend at university and a former Mass. revenue commissioner, married Weld's former chief of staff Kevin Smith. The former governor read the homily at the ceremony at King's Chapel.
The marriage was the first same-sex ceremony Weld has attended. "I was terrified when I saw I'd been assigned the homily. I didn't know what a homily was so I just told war stories about Mitchell and Kevin," he said.
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, a Democrat, also attended the wedding. Menino said he has seen growing acceptance of gay marriage.
"I found more and more people support same-sex marriage as I go around the city," he said.
Among the other high profile guests were former acting Gov. Jane Swift, a Republican, and Democrats Senate President Robert Travaglini, state Auditor Joseph DeNucci and former Attorney General Francis Bellotti.
Weld told reporters that he's opposed to any constitutional amendment barring gay marriage. He said that if he were not at the wedding he would have been in Washington opposing Romney.
In his testimony before a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Romney said same sex marriage "may affect the development of children and thereby future society as a whole."

Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 Burning Toward A Theater Near You
06.18.04 (1:58 am) [edit]
Fahrenheit 9/11, Michael Moore's newest controversial documentary, is hot, very hot. The film, created by Disney subsidiary Miramax, almost didn't make it. After seeing the final product, Disney refused to distribute the film. The documentary was trapped in limbo until recently, when Lions Gate and IFC Films finally wrangled it onto their distribution network. Now the film is burning its way into theaters nationwide, and may prove to be the hottest non-studio movie since The Passion of the Christ. The film features extremely controversial subject matter about the Iraq war and President George Bush's administration. Fahrenheit 9/11 will open in Los Angeles June 22 and in New York June 25. The opening of the film will expand as many as 1,000 theaters nationwide.
However, before the film can hit your movie screens, there is yet one more controversy to be resolved. The U.S. ratings board has deemed the film too much for younger viewers. It has been given an R rating for "violent and disturbing images and strong language" - no one under 17 admitted without parent or guardian.
Michael Moore, however, contends that teenage viewers should be allowed to see the film. "If they're old enough to be recruited ... they certainly deserve the right to see what's going on," Moore said in a statement. Moore also issued a statement regarding the revelation that he had footage of American soldiers abusing Iraqi prisoners far before the disturbing images from the Abu Ghraib prison hit the news. "I had it months before the story broke on '60 Minutes,' and I really struggled with what to do with it," Moore told the San Francisco Chronicle. "I wanted to come out with it sooner, but I thought I'd be accused of just putting this out for publicity for my movie. That prevented me from making maybe the right decision."

Human Rights Campaign endorses Kerry
06.17.04 (3:46 am) [edit]
The Human Rights Campaign has endorsed Sen. John Kerry for President of the United States. The decision was made by HRC's board of directors based on the candidate's support for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender equality, demonstrated leadership and his viability to win in November. "From voting against the Defense of Marriage Act to actively opposing 'Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,' John Kerry is a true leader for our community," said HRC President Cheryl Jacques. "Just six months into his first Senate term in 1985, he introduced a gay civil rights bill. His aggressive support for our community continued unabated for the years that followed, demonstrated time and again by perfect HRC ratings on GLBT issues in Congress."

Bush calls for constitutional amendment to stop gay marriage
06.16.04 (3:58 am) [edit]
President Bush today renewed his call for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage. Speaking by satellite hookup to a meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention, the president said marriage between a man and a woman "is the most enduring human institution" and needs defending from "activist courts and local officials." Delegates at the Indianapolis convention cheered Bush's call. However, lawmakers have shown little sign of moving for a vote during an election year. And even backers of an amendment acknowledge they're well shy of the two-thirds support needed for Congress to send it to the states.

U.S. Senate OKs adding gays to hate crime law
06.16.04 (3:57 am) [edit]
The U.S. Senate voted 65-33 Tuesday to give gay men and lesbians protection under the federal hate crime law, and officials said a debate was likely next month on a far more controversial measure to amend the Constitution with a ban on gay marriages. Taken together, the developments signaled the full Senate is moving onto politically charged terrain less than five months before the fall elections, and came on a day that President Bush renewed his opposition to gay marriages. "Before you get to marriage, you've got to get over hate, and today the Senate did," said Republican Sen. Gordon Smith of Oregon.

The poppers are set to recreate their infamous stage kiss this week - if Spears knees hold up.
The Material Girl has asked Spears to sing with her on Wednesday at the first of six New York shows of her world tour.
London's Sun newspaper quotes insiders who claim the two are on for a replay of their kiss at the MTV Video Music Awards last August.
Whether Spears will make is still unknown. She underwent surgery last week in New York for an injury she sustained while shooting a video for her new single.

Broadway is too racey for Republicans...oh, please!
06.08.04 (2:37 pm) [edit]
(New York City) Delegates to this summer's GOP convention in New York won't be seeing any of this year's biggest Tony Award winners when the party gets conventioneers out to see Broadway.
Convention organizers are setting up "nights out" for the delegates and their spouses, but when it came time to order tickets, the GOP decided the crop of Broadway's best was too queer.
"Avenue Q" is verboten. It won Tonys for best book and score, but for Republicans there are just too many four-letter words, and the the subplot where two gay characters who fall in love offended the party's party organizers' "family values".
"I Am My Own Wife" is also on the 'no go' list. The play won this year's Tony for Best play and earlier this year won a Pulitzer. No matter, it's about a transvestite.
Then there is "The Boy From Oz". Star Hugh Jackman won Best Male Performance in a Musical for his role as Peter Allen, the Australian singer and former husband of Liza Minnelli. It's on the banned list too because Allen was gay and died of AIDS.
The biggest winner at the Tonys with five awards, Stephen Sondheim's "Assassins," was vetoed. The musical is about nine killers and would-be killers of U.S. presidents, including the man who tried to kill Ronald Reagan.
Even last year's big winner, "The Producers" is on the list. It has a transvestite too.
So, what are the GOP delegates being trucked off to see? The party has bought blocks of tickets for "The Lion King", "42nd Street" and "Aida". Perhaps no one told the Republicans that the music for "Lion King", and "Aida" was penned by Elton John, and we know what he is.

I know the feeling. Your dogs are barking after a long day at work and all you want to do is plop down on the sofa and tune in to your favorite TV show. Then comes that pesky little voice in your head reminding you that you were supposed to work out today ... what a dilemma! Maybe these tips will give you a boost that will turn your quality couch time into time well spent!
[b]Go for the Afterglow[/b]
Not in the mood? Always keep in mind how great you’ll feel after working out. If you’re feeling down or sluggish, don’t convince yourself that exercising will sap your energy. It will do just the opposite. You’ll actually feel more energized following a workout, even if you're feeling tired beforehand. Plus, exercising is a great way to chase away the blues, even if it’s just a simple walk.
[b]Presumed Guilty[/b]
Think of the guilt trip you’ll save yourself by exercising if you go ahead and do it. That way, when you see your neighbors hoofing it down the road when you’ve decided to forgo your walk in favor of staying transfixed to American Idol, you won’t feel bad and beat yourself up about it. (Unless you consider kicking yourself an aerobic workout!)
[b]Dress the Part[/b]
Instead of changing into a tee shirt and jeans when you get home from work, go ahead and put on your exercise clothes. Now, whenever you get the chance to work in your aerobics video you’ll be ready to rock. And you’ll be less likely to skip your workout if you’re already decked out for it.
[b]
Get a Java Jolt[/b]
So, it’s time to head down to the Y and you’re thinking of giving class a miss because you’re tuckered out from the 9 to 5 grind. Head to the nearest vending machine or coffee shop and help yourself to a coffee or diet soda. It’s just fine to consume caffeine a few minutes before a workout; it will give your nervous system a boost. Bonus: Caffeine may actually speed up your metabolism for a time!
[b]Be a 10-Minute Man[/b]
I hear you: You really don’t feel like stepping on that treadmill (or is it dread-mill?) today. Well, do yourself a favor and resolve to walk just 10 minutes. I can almost guarantee you that once those 10 little minutes are up and your juices have gotten flowing, you’ll feel so much better that you’ll stay the duration of your workout. This tip has never failed me!

Opponent attacks Pete Coors as too gay-friendly
06.07.04 (10:13 am) [edit]
In Colorado, Bob Schaffer's U.S. Senate campaign sent out an "attack ad" that pointed out that Coors Brewing has been called "'one of the most GAY FRIENDLY companies in the nation' for granting benefits to SAME-SEX couples." Schaffer is attacking opponent Pete Coors, who's not all that gay friendly. Coors Brewing recently denounced his views on marriage rights. "It's a fascinating conflict," opines the Boulder Daily Camera "Two conservatives battling for the honor of being more hostile to a persecuted minority."
A Sad Passing...
06.06.04 (7:25 am) [edit]
Former President Ronald Reagan died Saturday after a decade-long battle with Alzheimer's disease. He was 93.
Reagan forged a coalition of conservatives and moderates to win the White House. His eight years in office marked a shift in the way America saw itself.
His supporters say he restored America's confidence in the wake of the disaster of the Vietnam War and the economic uncertainty triggered by the OPEC oil crisis of the 1970's. His controversial supply-side economics set the stage for the strongest economic growth America has experienced in the 20th century. And many say he was the driving force behind the end of the Cold War and the West's "victory" over communism.
Reagan's relationship with America's gay community was complex. He had personal gay friends, and brought gays into the White House to work in the administration.
"President Reagan will be remembered in part for his leadership [prior to running for president] in defeating the Briggs Amendment in 1978 that would have discriminated against hard working hard working teachers," Steven Fisher, Communications Director for the Human Rights Campaign told 365Gay.com.
But, as president he was accused failing to grasp the extent of AIDS.
In October 1, 1987 after the US Senate voted 75-23 to allow the former hospital at Presidio Army base to be used for a regional AIDS treatment facility in order to meet the projected needs of San Francisco Reagan said if the bill was passed by the House of Representatives, he would veto it.
His presidency was severely criticized in the play and later the film Angeles in America for doing little to help AIDS patients. A television biography went even further.
The Reagans featured a scene in which Ronald and Nancy are having breakfast when the subject of AIDS comes up. Reagan, in the script, says "They that live in sin shall die in sin" and refuses to discuss the issue further.
Elizabeth Egloff, a playwright who wrote the final version of the script, acknowledged there was no evidence such a conversation took place. But, she said, "we know he ducked the issue over and over again, and we know [Nancy] was the one who got him to deal with it." She added that other biographies noted that Reagan had trouble squaring homosexuality with the Bible.
CBS, which ordered the film refused to air it after receiving pressure from conservative Republicans.
Nevertheless, his opposition to AIDS funding is well documented in "Dutch," Reagan's authorized biography. Author, Edmund Morris, writes that Reagan once said of AIDS, "Maybe the Lord brought down this plague," because "illicit sex is against the Ten Commandments."
After leaving office, Reagan disclosed he was suffering from Alzheimer's.
"Ronnie's long journey has finally taken him to a distant place where I can no longer reach him," she said. "Because of this I'm determined to do whatever I can to save other families from this pain."

Bush campaign advisors: forget Iraq, start gay baiting hard
06.04.04 (12:39 pm) [edit]
The conservative base of the Republican Party is urging President Bush to stop campaigning on Iraq and concentrate on stopping gay marriage if he wants to win in November. Bush actually met today with James Dobson, head of the conservative Christian group Focus on the Family. Dobson, a leading supporter of the proposed constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage, reportedly told Bush that while conservatives are divided about the US role in Iraq, they're united in fighting same-sex marriage. Things that make you go "hmmm." Based on a poll yesterday that an overwhelming majority of Americans believe it should not be a campaign issue, we say bring it on.
