BAY STATE POLL RESULTS: Mass Residents Reject Gay Marriage Ban, Worry About Big Dig, and Oppose President Bush and Social Security Plan!

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 7, 2005--Overview of Bay State Poll

  • A majority (51.5%) of Massachusetts' residents oppose even the idea of the state legislature placing a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban gay marriage on the 2006 election ballot.
  • While 6 in 10 state residents consider the Big Dig a major improvement or something of an improvement in traffic flow, over half (52.6%) believe that major structural problems are very likely.
  • The gap between President Bush's (35%) approval rating and Governor Romney's (56%) approval rating among state residents has doubled since the last Bay State Poll taken before the November election. This 20% difference is the largest gap in evaluations of the two leaders since the Bay State Poll began.
  • State residents oppose the current proposal that would allow younger workers to invest a portion of their Social Security taxes privately 56% to 34% with 10% undecided. In addition, a full 45% of state residents think that the current Social Security system works pretty well and requires only minor changes.
  • The War in Iraq remains the biggest problem facing the nation according to a plurality (30%) of poll respondents. This percentage is up 10% from the last Bay State Poll. Education remains the number one statewide concern.
  • Less that half (42.8%) of the state's residents think that Senator John Kerry will run for President in 2008, and 60% think that this would be a bad idea.

These findings come from the Bay State Poll, a quarterly survey of Massachusetts's residents, conducted by the Center for Public Opinion Research at Merrimack College. Seven hundred and ten (710) randomly selected state residents over the age of eighteen were interviewed by telephone between 1/22/05 and 2/2/05. The survey's margin of error is +/- 3.8%. Detailed results and methodological information are available at www.merrimack.edu/polling.

Whose 'Ideal'?

02.03.05 (6:57 am)   [edit]
President Bush recently told a reporter, "Studies have shown that the ideal is where a child is raised in a married family with a man and a woman." But contrary to the president's statement, decades of academic studies have shown that a parent's sexual orientation has nothing to do with his or her ability to raise children. Just ask the nation's children's doctors, family physicians and child welfare professionals.
